About
My passion is helping my clients, period. Most people seek out an attorney during times of turmoil or change. They need an attorney they can trust who will guide them through the complicated maze of the legal process. That's where I come in. My name is Kayla Schoen and I'm originally from beautiful Fairhope, Alabama. I began my career in medical sales, but soon realized I needed more one-on-one interaction with people in a field where I could both challenge myself, and help others. Becoming a lawyer has done exactly that for me. During law school, I served under the Honorable Judge Alan King and the Honorable Judge Sherri Friday in the Jefferson County Probate Court. I also spent two years at a Birmingham-area law firm focusing on personal injury litigation. After graduating from Cumberland School of Law, I accepted a one-year term as a Judicial Clerk for the Honorable Judge Jim Hughey, III in Jefferson County Circuit Civil Court. Following my clerkship, I worked in the area of corporate defense, focusing on securities litigation. I also take great pride in serving the Birmingham community by volunteering regularly with the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyer's Program, both at the District Court Help Desk and the Domestic Relations Help Desk. I am an active member of both the Alabama State Bar Association, the Birmingham Bar Association, the Birmingham Inn of Courts and the Hoover Chamber of Commerce. I'm so glad you've come to visit my page and I look forward to working with you to resolve any legal issues you may be facing now, or in the future.

I hired Kayla to litigate a business matter for us and we were very pleased with her work and professionalism! It is hard to find someone who will go to bat for you and make you feel comfortable with your choice in a lawyer, but she took all the right steps to make it a great experience!
I retained Kayla for an employment contract matter and was very happy with her services! I would not hesitate to hire her again or recommend her to others. She made the entire process incredibly easy, and I have a peace of mind after leaving my job that I otherwise would not have had.
It saddens me to read all of the positive glowing reviews describing the work of Mrs. Shoen to be expeditious, through, responsive and accurate knowing that my family's experience has been nothing short of borderline passive aggressive, unresponsive and non transparent almost from the very beginning. This harrowing experience began for my family and I around the end of August of 2018 when my beloved uncle died unexpectedly. We began paperwork for me to administer estate by which this process has been grossly bumbled through and fumbled 95% of the time. Mrs. Shoen didn't keep my family and I updated as to the status of the case and judges wishes at any point in time. Nor did she even bother to let us know that court dates had been canceled due to heirs requests for extension. Nor did she return our phone calls or emails in a timely manner despite being paid $1000 up front to get started on our case. Then she all of a sudden calls me hurriedly around Thanksgiving black Friday to request the remaining funds due to be paid which was not in line with our original verbal agreement. I contested her request and the amount was decreased to $228 with the remaining to be paid after estate opening. After this scenario, things all seemed to go more downhill very rapidly. Heirs were calling my mom and I with information from probate we had no knowledge of despite having hired Kayla to be our representative which was disheartening and also very stressful. To date we have had 3 canceled court dates on technicality of not having all necessary actions completed prior to court by my attorney Mrs. Shoen. My last court date was June 26 at 2pm by which I spent the entire month or so prior trying to contact Kayla for confirmation and a check in to ensure our readiness to move forward. My calls and texts went unanswered and I never heard anything back from her. Not even a return email was received until the day before the court date. Mrs. Shoen apologized in her email for her gross negligence in handling my uncle's case explaining that she had closed her practice and that she was withdrawing herself from my case and mailing my case file and a refund check for all money's paid back to me. I spoke with her about this on June 25th and accepted this offer reluctantly as I was told i couldn't pick up file and check from her office since it was closed now. I asked that she send me the USPS confirmation so that I could follow up on the file and refund myself, but she never sent it. Today it is July 5, 2019 and I still have not received anything by mail as promised and also no response to my follow up email either.....Throughout all this long drawn out process my mom has fallen Ill and lost 40lbs due to stress. To boot, I have developed TMJ TMD and am dealing with my own distinct stresses in trying to get this estate resolved for my mom because my uncle was her best and only close friend. I know Kayla may not understand this because it isn't her family or her mom. I understand that Mrs Shoen has been dealing with quiet a few deeply challenging issues of her own here lately and that's why I've been so lenient as I know she is probably still learning how to juggle lifes difficulties simultaneously with lifes obligations and workplaces responsibilities. I have compassion for her and truly wish her the best in life but there was left much to be desired from the very minimal level of care attention and concern given to our case. I just wish I would known this before hand as my mom and didnt deserve this and we have wasted an entire year and still have yet to even get the estate opened or even stand before a judge. I'm so disappointed, stressed and literally exhausted from this process and dealing with lackadaisical representation has made this process the most cumbersome experience ever. At least when I finally get the file and refund I can move on with my life. I pray and wish I had had the same positice experience as some others.
