About

Trent has been an employer advocate for more than twenty-five years.  He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Washington, a JD from Willamette University College of Law and certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  He is licensed to practice law in Oregon, Washington, and the federal courts.  Trent provides employer-clients with pragmatic legal advice designed to reinforce organizational values and limit potential liability in employment-related matters.  He assists clients with a broad range of issues, including discipline and discharge, documentation, reinstatement of injured workers, discrimination, statutory leave, handbook development, wage and hour issues, internal investigations and regulatory compliance. He also represents employers with discrimination complaints pending before the EEOC or state civil rights agencies, such as the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries (BOLI).  In addition, Trent represents employers with union relationships in collective bargaining, contract administration and grievance arbitrations, as well as in proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board.  He presents workshops on sexual harassment, union avoidance, leadership building, policy administration and related topics and has written extensively on legal and policy issues affecting employers. Trent began with Cascade Employers Association as a legal intern in 1982, became Staff Attorney the following year and was named Chief Staff Attorney and Director of Labor & Employment Law Services in 1990.  During the spring of 2004, Trent established Whitford Law Offices LLC. Trent grew up in the Puget Sound area and prior to coming to Oregon, worked for Seattle First National Bank, in property management, and in the performing arts.

I was very pleased with my experience with Trent. He had a great mix of professionalism and kindness. I think that my greatest appreciation was that he took the time to actually listen and then made sure that my wife and I both clearly understood options and everything that was happening. Times requiring a lawyer are times that are filled with uncertainty and for myself I was in completely unknown territory. I am so grateful for the clarity he brought to a confusing situation, his consistant updates by email, and I am also grateful for a positive outcome. I felt fairly charged for his services and was happy with my experience.

Mr. Whitford is extremely knowledgable about employment and contract law. But, even more important is his keen analytical and strategic mind which helps see through the surface issues and facts to the underlying causes and motivations and paths to resolution. I was very pleased with her service

We contacted Mr. Whitford, about my husband being let go from his job, in a manor that violated his rights under the disability act. We explained to Mr. Whitford, that my husband was now unemployed. He agreed to take our case. And charged us a $1,500 retainer. We hired him in April of 2015. He literally wrote one letter on our behalf, and then we did not hear from him again. After 11 months, over 15 unreturned calls, supposed lost files, and every other excuse you can think of, he just called us today, and informed us, that he would only return $500 of our retainer. Do not hire this man. He is a complete fraud and a liar. We literally had to show up at his business, where they refused to come to the door, till we caught them in the window. They even went so far as to turn the lights out, to make it look like nobody was there. Disgraceful. We will be contacting the bar association.
