About

Laurie Adamshick is a partner in the Elder Law Practice of Rulon & Adamshick LLC, where she serves as an Elder Law Attorney specializing in Life Care Planning. In this role she helps guide older adults and their families through the maze of legal, financial and long-term care issues that arise when an older adult begins to need help with daily life. Laurie's expertise and perspective grew out of necessity during the years she served as primary caregiver and advocate for her late parents. Being present throughout each of her parents’ end-of-life journeys has given her tremendous empathy for adult children and others facing the prospect of helping an aging loved one through a long-term illness.Rulon & Adamshick is dedicated to helping families, through client-centered planning, find the best approach to paying for long-term care and preserving retirement assets. This may include Medicaid and Veterans Administration Aid and Attendance benefits planning. Since many families are confused and overwhelmed by the myriad issues that accompany an elderly loved one's care needs, the firm includes the services of a registered nurse and a social worker to provide coaching and guidance with navigating choices and making good decisions.Laurie is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and the Hawaii Estate Planning Council. She is affiliated with the Life Care Planning Law Firm Association and is a former Director of Hawaii Women Lawyers. She serves on the Board of Directors of Kokua Mau, a coalition dedicated to the improvement of care in Hawaii, and the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society. Laurie is a frequent speaker on elder law and care planning issues, and a contributor and service partner for KupunaWiki.com, an Oahu senior resource site.

After my father passed away, my mother and I met with our trust attorney, who my parents had been working with for years, Tom Rulon, who informed us of a new service he and Laurie Adamshick had launched to assist families like ours navigate care options for their elderly members. I was so happy this was available to us as I'd never heard of this type of service. It was a natural extension of their trust services in my opinion and at a reasonable fee. My mother agreed to sign up and so glad we did. For both my mother and I, it was a relief to have a knowledgeable team to ask questions, give us advice and let us know of the best options while I could focus on the medical attention. My mother also felt it took some of the pressure off of me and it really did as I had felt alone and uninformed dealing with the situation plus I live on the mainland coordinating care from afar. Laurie and I worked together on the thorough assessment including personal, medical and financial matters. We continued care at home, Laurie recommending a very professional service, compared to what we had had, with a dedicated team. This worked well until medical issues made it necessary to move my mother to a nursing home. One thing we were not aware of until we were into the process is that in Hawaii the nursing homes are 95% full, so it is difficult to find room. Because my mother had an acute heart condition, Kaiser was able to find a room through their affiliations. Laurie and the care team had excellent communication always available by text message or phone daily. We would problem-solve together. My mother was always included in discussions and decisions were ultimately left up to her. We felt Laurie to be professional yet having the aloha spirit, very caring and nurturing. I highly recommend hiring Laurie Adamshick to assist in your elder care planning.
