Steve Greenfeld was dismissive and judgmental - like he didn't want us as clients. The process of declaring bankruptcy is already emotionally taxing and humiliating. The last thing we needed was Greenfeld questioning our (reasonable) spending habits (i.e. "You spend $50/month on HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS?? That's ridiculous! I’ve never heard of someone spending so much!" or “You spend $95 just to get your hair done??” Please excuse me, but the last time I checked, (1) it is not my bankruptcy attorney’s job to judge how I spend my money for reasonable living expenses and (2) $95 is the going rate for beauticians. I have to maintain a professional appearance for my career! His behavior was unnecessary AND unprofessional. We filed bankruptcy because I lost my only source of income (my job) 8 months prior, and I was the breadwinner! We always had the feeling that he looked down on us and felt like he was doing us a favor. We never felt like he had our best interests at heart or cared about us at all. He could have pushed to have us file Chapter 7 because we were on the cusp of the means test. But his “considerable influence” (his words) with the Trustee wasn’t used for our benefit. So, we had to file Chapter 13 instead. Even after we finished paying off our Wage Earner’s Plan (early, might I add), he refused to complete our filing so we could have our case dismissed and move on with our lives! After a few months of him ignoring my calls to his office to get him to comply, I was completely fed up! So, I started keeping a record of every time I tried to contact him, with the results. I visited his office in person and was told that he wasn’t there. The next time I visited, I left a letter with his receptionist, which he said he did not receive. Next, I sent a certified letter threatening to sue him if he didn’t file our case with the Trustee. It was ONLY THEN, that our case was mysteriously filed with the Trustee, and our case dismissed. That process took AN ENTIRE YEAR! That is inexcusable! I WOULD NOT recommend Steven Greenfeld to anyone who does not look like him. He obviously feels he is superior and doesn’t need business from persons of color. So, humor him and find someone more qualified and antiracist!
