About

Stephen D. Harris thrives on legal investigation and research, crafting persuasive arguments, and working with clients to solve those often seemingly intractable problems we all face at times.Raised in upstate New York and Maryland, Steve moved to Colorado after graduating from the Wake Forest University School of Law to pursue his dream of applying his legal talents and skills for the benefit of others. During law school he helped found the Environmental Law Society and won the James A. Webster Faculty Award for Property Law. In 1998 he became a partner in the law firm of Merrill, Anderson, King & Harris LLC and then joined Alpern Myers Stuart LLC in 2008 in an Of Counsel capacity. Over his career Steve has successfully represented businesses, non-profit organizations, government entities and individuals in a wide range of cases in federal and state courts. Steve has also had the honor of teaching hundreds of Colorado College students about environmental policy, public lands, water law, and food and agriculture policy in 21 courses he designed between 1998 and 2018.In addition to his work as a lawyer, Steve has volunteered his time and expertise on non-profit and governmental boards and commissions including the Palmer Land Trust, the Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Trails Open Space and Parks Working Committee, the Colorado Springs Oil and Gas Committee, the Colorado Farm and Art Market Cooperative, and the Organic Seed Alliance. In his spare time, he enjoys attending and organizing concerts and music festivals, sampling Colorado’s delicious craft beers, and hiking, biking, and birding with his wife Michele and hound Yuri.
