About

Shannon L. Urbon currently serves as the Executive Director for The New Foster Care (TNFC), a non-profit focused on improving outcomes for children and families involved in the Michigan child protection system. In this role, Ms. Urbon oversees the day to day operations of the agency with an emphasis on performance and quality improvement. Ms. Urbon has developed and implemented process transformations to improve client experiences and outcomes. In addition, Ms. Urbon currently serves on the Council of the State Bar of Michigan’s Children’s Law Section and as the Treasurer of the Family Defense Attorneys of Michigan.Even before enrolling in the Michigan State University College of Law in 2005, Ms. Urbon had a long history of advocating for the disadvantaged. While an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan, Ms. Urbon worked for Safehouse, a domestic violence shelter, answering the 24-hour crisis line. After graduation, Ms. Urbon engaged in a professional career in New York City while continuing her advocacy on behalf of victims of domestic violence through volunteer work as a legal intern with Sanctuary for Families.After graduating from law school, Ms. Urbon chose to focus her career on family law, specializing in child abuse and neglect cases. While pursuing a private practice, she worked as a volunteer attorney with the Washtenaw County Office of the Public Defender Juvenile Abuse and Neglect section, before accepting a staff attorney position with the Detroit Center for Family Advocacy in 2013. In this role, and later as Executive Director of the Center, Ms. Urbon advocated on behalf of parents and caregivers facing legal issues that impacted a child’s entry into, or exit from, the foster care system. Ms. Urbon continues this mission in her current position with TNFC. She is a zealous and passionate advocate for those facing the uncertainty that is the child protection system and works tirelessly to improve the child welfare system from the inside.
