About
I have been practicing law since 1982. Born and raised in Southern New Jersey, I became my legal career as a judicial clerk in Cumberland County, NJ. Upon completion of my clerkship, I was an associate attorney for a law firm in Woodbury, NJ for approximately 4 years concenstrating on family law, personal injury, and criminal defense. In 1987, I became a partner in a law firm in Williamstown, NJ and also began working as a township prosecutor. In 1991, I relocated to Washington state and took a year off to explore my new surrondings. After passing the WA bar, I established my own law firm concentrating on family law and estate planning, particularly as these impacted non-tradiitonal families. In the Spring of 2016, I changed the location and nature of my practice. I have no staff and no longer accept contested family law cases, although I still handle adoptions and representation in mediations. I now concentrate my efforts on estate planning, probate, and guardianship issues. I am happy to meet with my clients at their homes or my home office in Bellevue while maintaining a post office address in nearby Newcastle.I have three Jack Russell terrier "rescues" with me in my office and, in addition to practicing law, I also teach Italian cooking. I recently had my Italian citizenship recognized and have been focusing on expanding my ability to read, write, speak, and hear Italian both here and in Italy.

I worked with Sam on my recent divorce based on a recommendation from a good friend. He was extremely knowledgable and approached all of our conversations with patience and empathy. Divorce is a difficult time, but he is very good at what he does. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
I was one of his first client's when he started in Seattle and have stayed with him over the years. I would recommend him to anyone going through a divorce or dealing with child custody issues. He is honest and to the point yet understanding of your feelings through such a difficult time. He is the best and I will be with him until my child turns 18. (6 more years)
An amazing , compassionate professional. He understands and listens.
Sam did a great job on my divorce. In spite of all the craziness that went on during the ordeal, Sam made it happen as smoothly and quickly as anyone could have. Keep up the good work.
Everyone knows that divorce is painful and can be brutal. Sam Ciapanna helped ease the fears and stigma that surround the process. He was always positive, uplifting and had a plan. If something unexpected happened he countered. His knowledge and compassion are his weapons and he uses them to the fullest! I have referred him to a number of my friends and will continue to do so.
Mr. Ciapanna was very personable as we discussed my guardianship case and whether he could help me. I liked him better than the other attorneys I spoke with and found his rates reasonable. However, when I forwarded the signed attorney-client agreement to him along with the court documents for the case, he complained that I had clogged up his email and wanted paper copies instead. After we agreed on a retainer and he sent me the agreement to sign, he changed his requirements and wanted to meet in person to discuss all the same things we had already discussed over the phone for an extra fee before he decided whether he wanted to represent me. Ultimately, I decided to look for another attorney.
