About
Ross brings hard work and dedication to the firm. His background is in land-use and environmental law, but has become a skilled commercial and personal-injury litigator since joining McCullough Khan in early 2012. In addition to those practice areas, Ross litigates probate, restrictive covenant, real property, homeowners association, construction defects, products liability, insurance coverage, judgment collection, and local government finance cases. In law school, Ross clerked with Burnie Maybank, former Director of the SC Department of Revenue. After graduating, he worked for two years with White & Smith Planning and Law Group, one of the country’s leading land-use law firms. Born and raised in Charleston, he enjoys surfing, kayak fishing, and spending time with his wife Alexis and their two miniature dachshunds Stono and Quito-Wayne. He serves on the Board of Zoning Appeals (Zoning Division) for the City of Charleston. He also serves on the Executive Board for both the Charleston Jewish Community Center and Hebrew Benevolent Society of Charleston, SC.

The best way to add to these superb (and accurate) reviews is by saying that Ross was originally hesitant to take my case against the major medical presence in our county as they have a stranglehold on everything. He evaluated my wrongful surgery, outlined options and included me decision by decision. I am thrilled with the results. Ross worked hard, professionally and smartly, answering my emails at all hours. He was meticulous about stating pros and cons and allowing me to be the final decision maker. And OMG, he has a sense of humor, can be really tough and is a pleasure to work with.
Ross is a terrific attorney. He displayed an excellent grasp of our case, the relevant laws and worked hard to win. More important, he worked "smart" for us, by allowing us to take on some otherwise costly tasks, considering our comments, and being realistic about the potential outcomes. He tailored his advice to the situation in a way most attorneys do not, so that the final outcome was cost effective and as favorable as it could have been.
My wife and I purchased our first home, and were takin advantage of by the contractor who flipped the house. We were subject to several costly and concealed construction defects. Ross Appel took our case. Ross fought hard to win us a reasonable settlement. He took an honest steadfast approach to our counsel. He openly informed us of all the challenges we would face throughout the process, a 100% no B.S. perspective. He then proceeded to defend our property. We are truly grateful to have Ross as our Attorney. We hope everybody is as fortunate as we are, to have such a focused, honest, talented, hardworking defender of Truth as their legal counsel. Thank you so much!
Ross left no stone unturned and took no prisoners. He handled our complex corporate litigation with great effort and aggressive finesse. If you see Ross coming at you from the other side then you better get your ducks in a row. Make no mistake, Ross is the boss.
Ross was recommended to me by a local Charleston lawyer as the "best attorney in town" for my particular case. I met with Ross, at his offices, who, in a very short time picked up on my particular situation. After hiring him, to represent me at a hearing in front of the Charleston County Board of Appeals, we had a satisfactory outcome. His command of the case details and the pertinent law was most definitely a major factor in me achieving the desired outcome.
In this instance, I found myself in a disagreement about a real estate Partition. I engaged Ross Appel of the McCullough Kahn Firm (359 King Street, Charleston). Immediately, Ross (the consumate professional) jjumped on the case and settled my nerves and, the other side's aggressive tendencies. Independently, Ross prepared a spreadsheet of three probable outcomes and identified my minimum and maximum exposures. Ross quickly resolved the case without litigation and without formal mediation mechanisms. Throughout the process, Ross focused on our goals, my budget and the real-world exigencies. I offer Ross Appel my highest recommendation!
He was very thorough & very creative in ways that helped our case. He developed the agenda of the key issues we wanted addressed in our meeting with the Kiawah Partners & with the Planning Commission. They were well presented in a non- confrontational mannering. I have high praise for the successful work he did for us!
Ross was referred to me by a member of the development team. We did not know each other prior to this time. My company develops unique neighborhoods. A new (high profile) site was chosen in the Charleston market that I knew would require specialized legal expertise. Ross was the perfect choice to navigate the team through a "very trying" process. He was instrumental in keeping team members on task and holding persons employed by the regulatory body accountable. I recommend Ross without reservation. Truly an attorney at the top of his game and a person of integrity.
He helped us regain a permit for weekly rentals from the town government that was making a concerted effort to restrict them. He went to the meetings, worked with the principles, and helped us in this multi step process. He then helped with the first of the new license renewals. It was a long, hard, uphill, process and he prevailed
We had a zoning issue in our area so we asked around for recommendations for a lawyer. We then phone interviewed them. What we found out was that none of them knew anything about zoning, even though they said they did. In seems that they somehow thought that since they knew how to close real estate transactions this also made them experts on the intricacies of zoning. Finally we received a recommendation from the Coastal Conservation League for Ross. It didn't take long in our interview with him to realize that he actually knew Charleston County zoning. We subsequently hired him for our zoning issue. He gave us great advise and the result was that the Planning Commission rejected the applicants rezoning request. We would definitely hire Ross again!
