About
Ron is a trial lawyer serving as Of Counsel at Kaplan Law, LLC. Before beginning his legal career, Ron was involved in public service; helping marginalized communities gain respect and dignity. As a result of his work with women rights, minority groups, and college students, Ron was presented with a leadership award by the local NAACP chapter. Considered one of the nation’s top client counselors by the Law Student Division of the American Bar Association, Ron now focuses his talent and passion on helping people who have been severely injured. Ron represents victims of drunk driving and those with devastating injuries from dental malpractice, pharmaceutical errors, and other life-changing events. Ron strongly believes that those who are catastrophically harmed deserve to have their dignity restored or compensated for – especially when their injuries are a result of corporate greed or reckless indifference to the poor, disabled, and other vulnerable populations. Ron continues to volunteer with students, minority groups, and tackles several pro bonoprojects a year to give back to the community. A frequent public speaker to various legal and non-legal organizations, Ron believes in raising strong leaders and lawyers to protect the vulnerable and make our society stronger. Ron was presented with Lewis & Clark Law School’s Mentor of the Year Award; presented with the Community Spirit Award at the Lewis & Clark Distinguished Alumni Dinner; and was further recognized by the Oregon State Bar ONLD with the Public Service Award.

This June, I was intentionally hit-and-runned by a car on my motorcycle while helping to direct traffic at the protests in Portland, causing serious injuries to my knee that require surgery and a year's worth of recovery. Since the other vehicle that hit me didn't have insurance, every single PI lawyer I called couldn't (or wouldn't) do much to help. I called Ron Cheng based on a referral from one of my lawyer friends, and I am so incredibly glad that I did. Ron knew that the chances of the other driver surfacing to provide insurance were very slim, but given the circumstances, he offered to help me on a pro bono basis to help navigate the claims process with my own insurance companies. Ron looked into my policies and provided context and information about whether or not they could be stacked. He drafted and sent a demand letter to the other vehicle's owner. He wrote a letter to my own medical insurance company when they initially declined to cover my surgeries. He spent hours with me on the phone talking me through my rights and the ins and outs of this process. Ron is an intelligent, patient, informative, and extremely generous guy. He always explained things in an extremely clear way, was always honest about my situation and its prospects, and prevented me from losing tens of thousands of dollars to the insurance companies unnecessarily. Insurance is an incredibly complex set of systems in this county, and having someone like Ron in my corner to help explain and navigate things was invaluable. While he was never officially my attorney, I would refer him (and already have) in a heartbeat. Thank you, Ron!
Working with Ron for my personal injury case was a breeze and he made every effort possible to explain my options and what he thought was the best route forward. His assistant, Daphne, was also extremely helpful and helped me with gathering the documents I needed to get over to them for my case. Overall, I couldn't be happier and I would recommend Ron to my friends and family.
I called Mr. Cheng's office to get help with with an eviction case. He was kind and listened to my story fully asking question to clarify when needed. I could tell he really is one of those guys that cares and does not mind taking up his valuable time to help people in bad situations. In the end he referred me to another office that handles my type of case. I can tell he is extremely knowledgeable in his field and would not be shocked in a few years if he is one of the best known Lawyers in Portland.
Ron Chang and his assistant Rosey were very prompt, as prompt as a lawyer can be, with my case. My case was about my landlord having bedbugs in the units and, knowingly, renting them out. He was able to settle the case in my favor and protect my rights at the same time. As a matter of fact, he made absolutely sure I would not end up being responsible for the other party in the future. He always kept me up to date with any information and called me back in a timely manner. Ron Cheng cares. He is an excellent attorney.
