About

I am an attorney, an Economics professor, and a software developer. My practice today consists primarily of bankruptcy and business law, and the related fields, such as mortgage modification, short sales and debt settlement. In addition to my law degree, I hold a Ph.D. in Economcis and Statistics (thus the references to "Doc" and "dochawk.".)  I taught at Penn State for five years before returning to Las Vegas. While I handled bankruptcies prior to obtaining the Ph.D., and even wrote the in-house software used on them in the 1990s, I find the work today far more satisfying.  Today, most of the people and business I work with need the help because of something that has happened--job loss, employer bankrtupcy, and so forth.  Today, the debtor that simply spent without thinking is the exception, rather than the common case.

Richard Hawkins was extremely informative and guided me through a very difficult time. There are a lot of ups and downs in this process, and I can tell you without hesitation, his expertise and guidance was top notch. What you need to know is that most of these situations take around 6-9 months to setup. Try to take your time and plan......

Hawkins is very irresponsible and arrogant. He was late to bk chapter 7 hearing for my fiancee, he ended up not filing all the necessary motions and cost her a continued amount of grief. Her mortgage company shows a current home in bk when in fact she has continued to pay mortgages on time and never late. He charged her 2000.00 dollars and did nothing to correct his errors. The bk court trustee allowed the chapter 7, however she admonished Hawkins for his incompetence and failing to file correct motions with the court. Since his despicable display of incompetence, she has suffered great pain and anguish. She sold her home and the mortgage company can't close the escrow because Hawkins didn't file the correct paperwork, to show the bk chapter 7 was discharged and the house was retained and payments were made by her. Save yourself the grief and don't ever use Richard Hawkins for anything.

He promotes himself as a successful and knowledgeable BK attorney, and he may appear knowledgeable, but in no way professional. He is constantly late for meeting or even court, highly disorganized, and does not follow through with his responsibilities. He worked on our BK for almost 7, missed numerous deadlines, missed filing countless documents, and we were threatened with dismissal several times. He will quote you one cost, then bill and bill and bill. He's been known to keep trustee payments, mortgage payments, and overcharge clients. We were billed over $23,000 for our BK, and he's been known to charge clients close to $100K over several years. We finally had to substitute counsel, and Schwartz & Associates took less than 1 year to clean up his mess and get our BK discharges. Sam Schwartz Andy his team have cleaned up a lot of his messes.

Attorney Hawkins impressed me as an extremely knowledgable attorney. He was easy to talk with, had a good grasp of the variables involved in each option we discussed, and was quite personable. Unfortunately, once I signed the retainer agreement and paid my deposit I had great difficulty in getting him to respond to me by either email or phone call. I sent 3 emails over a 2 week period with no response. I was then out of town for 3 weeks with still no response. Upon my return I made 4 phone calls in 5 days & sent 2 additional emails, without hearing from him. I finally only got a response after threatening to contact the Nevada Bar Assoc. with a complaint. Only then did I receive a brief email response which did not address the question I had posed regarding my case. He offered no apology or explanation for the previous lack of response, and suggested we set a meeting for the following week. During the 3 months he represented me, I never received a statement of account and although I have requested a refund of my retainer, I fear I'll never see that money again. I cannot recommend this attorney. He and his entire office were extremely unprofessional and unresponsive.
