About
I am a D.C. native who grew up on Capitol Hill. I attended Columbia University and graduated with a degree of Political Science. I lettered in Crew and Football.I attended Georgetown University School of Law. I now represent corporate and individual clients, as both plaintiffs and defendants. My practice is primarily in the areas of family law, bankruptcy, and landlord/tenant issues. I have successfully represented dozens of clients brought their cases to closure to trial in both Virginia and Maryland federal and state courts. While I enjoy arguing the issues before a judge, I am often able to resolve cases through mediation and negotiation. This particulariliy makes sense in the areas of divorce and child custody and support. I like to think that when life is at its most challenging, I can help you turn it around!

Throughout 2013 and 2014, Rachael Hammer has done an excellent job with my divorce, support and custody case despite extremely contentious and difficult circumstances. The custody case started with the mother trying to limit visitation to twice per month which led to a hearing where Ms. Hammer successfully argued for joint custody. Ms. Hammer guided us through months of negotiations and litigation to a highly successful outcome. She has stayed with us in the aftermath, taking late night and weekend phone calls, through pick-up explosions and police involvement. I can not say the case has been pleasant, but Ms. Hammer and her legal assistant Katrina Smallwood, have remained a calm and steady presence no matter the circumstance. Ms. Hammer is knowledgeable about Family Law in both DC and Virginia, reliable, and professional. She works well with Clients and opposing counsel. It has been an outstanding representation. I have highly recommend Rachael Hammer to friends and acquaintances who have required legal assistance.
Rachael Hammer is an awesome attorney! She was retained for a extremely complicated tenant-landlord matter. In two days to prepare for trial she was able to win my case. Outstanding results thanks to Rachael Hammer and Katrina Smallwood her devoted paralegal.
This past spring, my husband and I sought the counsel of Rachel Hammer for a very concerning issue with our next door neighbors. Ms. Hammer, understanding the sensitivity and complex issues dealing with a neighbor, wrote two letters on our behalf. Her approach was thoughtful, measured and practical while supportive of both parties knowing we would likely be neighbors for a long time. We would not hesitate to seek her legal advice and services for future actions. Her vast experience in these types of disputes, expert legal advice and sound judgment make her an outstanding attorney we would highly recommend. We also appreciated the professionalism of her paralegal who provided us with excellent assistance and support during this process.
I reached out to Rachel Hammer when I started the process of a loan modification on my house and my bank would not approve me for wrongful reasons. Not only did the bank try to deny my modification but they also tried to foreclose on my house. Rachel Hammer and her assistant Katrina Smallwood, understood what a trying and emotional experience foreclosure is on any family. You can trust that your matter will be treated with the professionalism and compassion you deserve. They stood ready to assist me, no matter how complex the issue with the bank was. They walked me through the process step-by-step and gotten my loan modification approved. Katrina Smallwood was diligent and efficient with an eye for detail and a passion for effective advocacy. In court, Rachel’s experience, preparation, and ability were evident. Rachel Hammer fought hard to help me avoid having to declare bankruptcy, was great about communicating everything that was happening and in the end, satisfied my every need as an attorney. Hiring Rachel Hammer was the greatest decision I have ever made, and I highly recommend her!
my mother hired rachael to handle her divorce. not only did rachael ignore all communications with the lawyers but ignore paperwork as well. the divorce ended up being thrown out and i had to refile. when asked to part ways she agreed to returning HALF of the payment even though she did zero work on the case only to dodge my phone calls and delay returning the payment. when i was finally able to reach her she said she did not have enough money to repay what SHE agreed to return and continue to dodge my calls and offer to pay me in increments of the money that is owed. after wasting my time and money, she had the audacity to say i was “bullying” her for the money she owed. i still have not seen a cent of this money she’s agreed to return. do not hire her.
