About

I received my undergraduate degree from Harvard in 1989.  In 1994, I graduated first in my class from George Washington University law school, where I served on the law review.  I began my legal career as associate appellate counsel with the Criminal Appeals Bureau of the New York Legal Aid Society, and then served as a staff attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.  I then worked at the Montana Advocacy Program from 2002 to 2007, where I represented clients in state and federal courts and administrative agencies in cases of discrimination in employment, education, government services, and public accommodations.  I served as a member of the Courthouse Access Advisory Committee from 2004 through 2006, and a member of the Montana Transportation Partnership from 2005 through 2007.  Since 2007, I have been in private practice representing plaintiffs in employment and personal injury cases.  In 2009, I received the Montana Trial Laywers Association’s Appellate Advocacy Award. I have deep Montana roots.  My great grandmother was Harriet Rankin, the sister of Montana congresswoman Jeannette Rankin and Montana lawyer Wellington Rankin.  I live in Helena with my wife and children.  I am an avid mountain biker and snowboarder.

Mr. Hohenlohe was my first experience hiring a lawyer and taking legal action. I was discriminated and retaliated against due to a disability in graduate school. The case was a challenge as it was not a traditional employer/employee situation. I had been bearing this abuse on my own for three years and he quickly gained a full understanding of the injustices, legal infractions and the impacts on my life and health. In hiring Philip Hohenlohe, I had gained not only legal representation, but an advocate. During the course of the grievance process, I often struggled with discerning appropriate action when we encountered impediments (as I had for the three years on my own). Phillip was always completely transparent and straightforward with me about what my options were, what those options entailed, and what he felt was best for me. He always ensured I had a full understanding before allowing me to commit to a decision, which gave me back my power and confidence that I always had full control of the case. On the single occasion I wanted to go a different route than recommended, I had his full support. He was sensitive to my limitations (my disability) and had a good, natural feel for when I needed time and when I needed encouragement to move forward in a timely manner (such as proceeding to the state level when the school failed to respond). He was extremely patient with my many questions and made room for my strong emotions while remaining professional and compassionate. I have never felt rushed or unimportant while working with him. I feel he cared about me as a whole person, getting what I could of my life back and what I needed for justice. He understood from the start that I did not want another graduate student to suffer the same discrimination and abuse. Mr. Hohenlohe has been with me from the day I hired him to ensure that appropriate policies were corrected and brought into compliance with the law. Mr. Hohenlohe continues to go above and beyond my expectations. He truly works WITH his client. Phillip is not just an exceptional lawyer, he is a remarkable human being. His manner with clients, opposition, and investigators was always cool, confident, and respectful. He not only has a prodigious knowledge of the law, he is committed to justice and his clients. Mr. Hohenlohe is personally invested and will fight for what is right.

There is not enough room to write how amazing Phil is. He has worked on my case for the last 6 years. He not only won my case which was quite complicated, but was very ethical, informative, hard working tenacious and I could go on. He always promptly got back to me when I had questions. He continued to reassure me even after our case was overand and made the whole legal battle bareable by doing 90% of the work. He is incredibly knowledgeable which was apperant and helpful thru the whole thing and most important to me, honest and good hearted. He always had my best interest instead of his and would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone.

Personal Injury suit for rear end crash with a very difficult individual. She did not report accident to her insurance and I was overwhelmed with injury and working with both mine and her insurance companies. Phil was wonderfully supportive and handled both companies with accuracy and finesse. Would hire him again!

As my first, and hopefully last, need for an attorney, Phil was very knowledgeable and patient in guiding me through the way everything would work. He was prompt with all communication and notified me regularly of and progress with my case. Even months after everything had been finalized, he kept in touch to make sure I was satisfied with the way things turned out and just to check in with my well-being, as it was a very stressful case for me. I would highly recommend at least meeting with Phil for your legal aid needs. He knows what he's doing and will treat you with the respect and compassion you deserve.
