Nelson W. (NW) Taylor, III, was born in Beaufort, North Carolina.  He graduated from Beaufort High School in 1945 and matriculated at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina in August of that year, a little before his seventeenth birthday.  Two years later, he received a NROTC scholarship.  Since Citadel did not have a Naval ROTC at that time, he transferred to Chapel Hill to attend the University of North Carolina. There he received an AB in Political Science in 1949 and a Juris Doctor with honors in 1955.  His time at Carolina was interrupted by spending three years as a Naval Officer during the Korean War, first aboard a destroyer and then in the Naval Supply Center in Norfolk, Virginia.  Back at Chapel Hill, he wrote for the Bar Review once about how one could be prosecuted for income tax fraud based solely on one’s increase in net worth.Nelson was admitted to the NC State Bar in 1955.  He practiced law in Fayetteville, North Carolina for ten years, becoming a partner in Tally, Tally and Taylor.  In 1965, he moved back to Beaufort and established his law practice in Beaufort. The law firm was relocated to its current location in 1979 and now operates as Taylor and Taylor, P.A., located in downtown Morehead City at 610 Arendell Street directly across from Katherine Davis Park.  His partner in the firm is his son, Derek Taylor, and the firm has one associate attorney, Michael W. Thomas.Nelson also served in the General Assembly in 1967-1968.  He has served as past President of Fayetteville Jaycees, member Fayetteville Rotary Club Board of Directors, Chairman of Cumberland County Chapter of the American Red Cross Board of Directors, Carteret County Chamber of Commerce, Member of NC, 3B District and Carteret County Bar Associations, Member North Carolina Advocates for Justice, a past Editor for NC "Bar Notes", a Bar Association Publication.The law firm is a general practice covering a wide range of areas of law; commercial law, shipping center representation, landlord tenant documents, problems and solutions, personal injury, property disputes, municipal law, criminal and motor vehicle violations,  real estate and civil litigation, and Wills and estate planning.  Mr. Taylor’s practice is as varied as the firm itself as he has been practicing law for over 60 years and has dealt with many aspects of the law.  The firm currently represents the Towns of Morehead City, Newport and Atlantic Beach and Carteret Community College and Mr. Taylor was general counsel for Carteret-Craven Electric Membership Cooperative for over 30 years.
