Birkhoff, chair of our Tax and Estate Planning group and member of the firm’s Corporate Law group.Neil’s practice includes federal, state and local tax planning for individuals and businesses, employee benefit plan issues, estate planning and estate administration. He represents businesses and individuals before tax authorities and in court on tax matters.Neil is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and a past chair of both the Virginia State Bar’s Section of Taxation and the Virginia Bar Association’s Section of Taxation. Prior to joining Woods Rogers in 1987, Neil was a trial attorney in the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.Neil is a contributing author to several continuing legal education publications and teaches classes on estate planning and nonprofit organizations as an adjunct professor of law at Washington and Lee University School of Law. Neil is recognized for excellence in tax law in Best Lawyers in America and Virginia Super Lawyers.He’s a graduate of the University of Virginia, earned his law degree from the College of William & Mary and his masters of tax law from George Washington University.His community involvement includes service on the boards of directors of Feeding America Southwest Virginia and Goodwill Industries of the Valleys.
