About
A planner and protector by nature, I enjoy helping clients whether they are planning their family's future and their own retirement or trying to determine the best option in the midst of a family medical crisis. Either way, everything I do is about connecting with my clients and helping them achieve some peace of mind.I grew up in the Dallas, Texas area, and went to law school at the University of Utah. During law school, I volunteered with the Senior Law Project at Utah Legal Services and served as a judicial intern for Administrative Law Judge Harvey Sweitzer at the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Hearings and Appeals - Probate Hearings Division. I also worked as a graduate research assistant to Professor Lee Hollaar at the University of Utah, for whom I reviewed and edited the intellectual property treatise, “Legal Protection of Digital Information” (BNA Books, 2002).I practiced in Texas for several years, where I was regularly appointed by the Dallas County Probate Courts as an attorney ad litem in both guardianship and probate matters. I moved to Colorado in early 2009, and joined a small elder law firm. I'm now Senior Counsel and the Managing Member of Smith & Mitchell, LLC.

Michelle went above and beyond what was required during the application/determination process of obtaining Medicaid for my parents. The determination took over a year and despite this long time frame, Michelle continued to be current with the case. She was professional, knowlegeable, and courteous during the whole process. She is a very genuine person and her confidence seems so natural -- a result of her excellent preparation and strong knowledge.
Michelle was extremely courteous, knowledgeable and helpful in the preparation of all the paperwork and communications with the Colorado Medicaid agencies involved with getting my wife admitted to a nursing home. I would highly recommend "Shupe and Associates" elder law firm and Ms. Smith in particular. Thank you.
I hired Michelle to clean up title issues on some properties and probate issues. She was fast and prompt in answering questions and getting the proper documents recorded.
Michelle was the perfect lawyer and human to help us set up medical and financial powers of attorney for a family member who was mentally impaired. She dealt with our family member in a gentle and compassionate manner and helped him understand the need for signing the documents. She made sure that the documents had all of the "ts" crossed all of the "is" dotted! I would recommend her is a heartbeat!
