About
I have been practicing law since January, 1994. Having received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, New York Chapter while in Law School, I did not end up practicing this area of law by accident and I think my clients recognize that.I view my role as helping my clients understand what the legal system can and cannot do in resolving their disputes with their spouse or former spouse, ensuring that they obtain an equitable resolution of their dispute, and assisting them in dealing with the emotional turmoil that often accompanies a divorce or post divorce proceedings. My goal is to avoid unnecessarily increasing the tension level between the parties, or to “pour gasoline on the fire” simply to satisfy a misdirected client, and thereby increase the animosity (and legal fees) to everyone. However, when justified, I will thoroughly and aggressively pursue all avenues of relief for my clients.I have over 20 years of experience practicing exclusively in this area of law and have represented countless clients in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx in divorces, custody and visitation disputes, child support and maintenance disputes, orders of protection, as well as negotiating pre nuptial and post nuptial agreements between couples. While I prepare each case for as if it were going to trial, my goal is to resolve issues, whenever possible by agreement, often by the use of creative approaches to solve problems that would otherwise be litigated – at significant emotional and financial cost.I started my own practice after working for many years in a prominent matrimonial law firm so that I could give personal attention to all of my clients. There are no inexperienced associates that will work on your case – only me. While I cannot promise you a particular result, I can promise you that whether your case is large or small, it will be handled competently and that both you and your case will receive my utmost attention. All telephone messages are returned promptly and clients are routinely provided with my cell phone number so that they can reach me in an emergency, or after “normal” business hours, should the need arise.Should you need sound legal advice on a matrimonial or family law matter, please call me at 516-280-6806.

Michael was able to finalize my divorce after 16 years of dealing with lawyers that could not close the deal. He kept me informed step by step by copying me on correspondence with my ex-husband’s lawyer. Thank you for your professionalism.
I had spoken to Michael about a potential custody hearing and he was very methodical throughout the entire ordeal. He broke down what I needed to do and did not just humor me when I asked what our chances were. I end up hiring him and have no regrets whatsoever. With his help, both myself and the mother of my child were able to come to an amicable arrangement. In addition, Michael was very considerate of my budget and mindful of how stressful the whole situation was for someone who did not have much prior experience with the court system. In the end, this man does not only try to achieve a desirable outcome for his client, but also ensures they are able to maintain stability throughout the process. You definitely get your money's worth. And most of all, you get peace of mind. Fully recommend!
Michael Cohen has helped me a lot. He sat down with me, and normally listened to my story, and provided an enormous input to help me in my quest to resolve the matter presented against me in court. This was the first attourney in my experience, who actually is a decent human being. I was able to extinguish my worries, calm down for the night, and gain emotional traction to move on in the resolution of the matter. Being helped by this genuine person, while facing an array of charges in court, was one of the best experiences in my life. Thank you, dear Michael, for helping me! I wish you a continuing success, best of health, and happiness.
I've spoken to a lot of lawyers during my Lord of the Rings style quest for divorce information. Some have been courteous and given me a moment of their time. Some have point blank refused the second they think there's a possibility I won't be useful to them. Michael is one of the few with the kindness and patience to go through my case like a human being. He listened, he talked, and at the end, he recommended I pursued my case in a different state. Anyone who puts the time in to recommend you don't do business with them is the type of person I wouldn't hesitate to recommend doing business with. In a world of sharks, he is a dophin - agile, kind, and every bit as smiley as his picture shows. Talk to him!
Michael was a lifesaver when I was dealing with post-divorce parental alienation. He understood what I and my kids were going through and had the knowledge and experience to navigate through the dysfunctional NYS court system. He also had the wisdom and morality to advise me that in some cases my money would be ill-spent when he could have charged me for services. If you need a divorce attorney, mediator, or help with any post-judgement issue, Michael Cohen is your man!
I have spoken at length with Michael Cohen about divorce and I can tell you he knows and has experienced way more than your average divorce lawyer. There is no situation that he has not come across multiple times. Without his expertise I probably would have made a few expensive mistakes, not to mention the stress.
good lawyer to have on your side
I consulted with Michael Cohen regarding child support issues. He took the time to review court documents and provide valuable advice, even though it was only a consultation. I appreciate the time he put in to provide me with that advice.
Michael was an excellent attorney who helped me through a very difficult divorce with my very unreasonable ex wife. When Michael wasn't able to get me a quick , amicable and fair settlement, he began a more aggressive approach to my divorce. Michael began to slowly wear down my-ex and he finally helped me get settlement that I was pleased with. Michael knows divorce law and knows how to strategize against his adversaries to bring them to their knees when they are not amicable. His legal paperwork is also impeccable . Michael was pretty much superior to my wife's lawyer in every way from his professionalism to his litigation strategies. Michael is always available to speak with and always makes you feel your case is very important to him. Michael is knowable is ALL areas of divorce and custody and I would strongly recommend just about anyone in any situation to him.
Despite all of the emotional baggage, negativity and stress that comes with a divorce Michael is highly-effective at focusing on the getting though the divorce with least amount of collateral damage. I believe that we (Michael and I) came out of my divorce successfully. It's not winning, it's about coming out of it fairly. In my case, we have two young children involved. Michael and I developed a strategy and we stuck by it throughout the emotional roller coaster known as a divorce proceeding. Although the proceeding took a bit longer to execute than it should have (thanks to the flip-flopping of the other side), we finally got it done. Finances and kids fairly handled. Little to no collateral damage from the divorce proceedings. One comment that Michael made early on that impacted me is that a divorce is a business separation. Said another way, I/you need to look at divorce as a separation of a business-- nothing personal; it's only business. Anytime I found myself getting a little emotionally charged-up, I would remind myself, "this is just business." Beyond that, Michael is very knowledgeable and adept at providing the pros and cons for every question, option or scenario to help guide me (or you) through this journey. Most importantly, he knows the law. He was patient, kind, and really enabled me (or you) to make the best decisions with all of the information in front of you. Michael was not interested in starting World War 3 between you and your spouse if unwarranted, but he surely did not suffer fools lightly. If the opposing lawyer made poor comments, motions, etc. he was quick and aggressive to nip that in the butt. Anytime we hit some turbulence with the opposing lawyer, it was extinguished. I would strongly recommend Michael to another and I have already done so. I would certainly use him again, but I hope that I won't need to.
