About

Melissa (Meira) Amster has dedicated her law career to special education and disability law. She seeks to help parents attain maximum potential through advocacy. Her passion in this area of law comes from personal experience. In October 2011, her daughter was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect which required open heart surgery. At first she found the process of attending to her daughter’s medical and physical needs overwhelming, but soon found online support groups. These support gave her valuable information and encouragement to advocate for her daughter.Over the years her advocacy skills increased, as well as her passion for helping others. Ms. Amster found a wide discrepancy in services that children might receive correlated to how good of an advocate or how knowledgeable about services their parent was. The better the advocate, more services the child might receive. Ms. Amster strongly believes that all people with disabilities, not just ones that have better advocates, should receive all needed available services. With this passion in-hand, she began volunteering with the Office of Clients’ Rights Advocacy, Disability Rights California. She was later a temporary Clients’ Right Advocate. There she focused on evaluating regional center eligibility, securing appropriate placements, and analyzing and giving legal advice regarding notices of action from the regional center.Ms. Amster is very thankful for her advocacy skills and all she has accomplished on behalf of her daughter. Realizing her own daughter is not the only person with a disability who is in need of advocacy, the Amster Law Firm was formed to advocate on the behalf others with disabilities.

Melissa helped guide me through an appeal with the regional center to make sure my child was getting the services he needed. Though she did not formally represent us, she gave me the advice I needed and pointed me toward useful resources that helped us win our appeal.

My child was not getting the help or accommodations he needed. I tried tirelessly to get him the help but nothing seemed to be working and I felt defeated and at a dead end. Mrs. Amster was so kind and provided advice and was so helpful. Feeling alone trying to advocate for my child was very difficult and with her help I felt hope and she was very reassuring. She represented us and her help provided the means of escape from a difficult situation like a lifeline. In addition to this, we were finally able to get somewhere and obtain help for my child. Mrs. Amster is wonderful and very knowledgeable and without her help we would not have gotten anywhere. I highly recommend her.

We've had a couple of issues stemming with services for our disabled son, and Melissa's advice not only put us at ease, but helped us to gain the upper hand in a hearing, in which we prevailed in all aspects. We are thankful for her help and admire her comprehensive understanding of government services for disabled children.

Mrs. Amster was very knowledgeable how to get our son the help he needed in school. She was a pleasure to work with. He is now doing great in school and without her, I do not know where we would be. We are so thankful for her help to our family I would highly recommend her!

Melissa was my first call in a situation we had given every chance to, but one that seemingly continued to sadden and disappoint us. Ms. Amster not only made me realize I had even more legal rights than I knew, but made us feel secure and not alone. She explained everything in clear detail and listened like no on else had before her.. She also responded to phone calls and emails as quickly as possible. She is everything you will want and need in a special education attorney and that is a rare find. I would and will recommend her highly to anyone who wants a caring and extremely knowledgeable attorney on their side.

Melissa helped us navigate through the legal system with our three year old daughter and the school district. We were able to get everything we want for our daughter, who required special needs, thanks to Melissa's expert legal services. I highly recommend her service.

I had just been served with a letter that I was being taken to due process for an evaluation my IEP team agreed we should be given. My husband and I had been given the wrong information telling us there would be no difference between having an IEE or another District evaluation. With the unpredictability of District evaluations we opted for the IEE, only to find myself now being told I would have to attend a mediation and withstand the process up to a hearing. I was lost and frustrated. There was no number to call to ask for an explanation. I would have to spend my time preparing, not even knowing what I was preparing. Then Melissa stepped up to help me. What was refreshing is her honesty with me telling and her confidence that I had all that I needed to go to that meeting. She explained to me all the details I needed. She was sympathetic and encouraging. Most of us know that having an attorney at your table usually changes an outcome. Melissa told me I had what I needed for the mediation, gaining my trust. If things went on to a hearing then I would have hired her in a heartbeat. She made herself available to me while I was in the process of mediation answering my questions. I would have been lost without her help. I am thankful for her generosity with her time and knowledge. She followed up by guiding me to other areas where I could find information and educate myself. This is a rarity in my experience. Again, I feel fortunate to have made her acquaintance. I hope I do not need a lawyer anytime soon. I pray my sons journey is filled with honest people who want to help him reach his full potential and give him everything that by law he is entitled. If that is not the case and I find myself needing the expertise of a lawyer, she is the one I will call.

Melissa was extremely helpful when I was trying to get home nursing for my son and again when I was filing for IHSS Protective Services. She found pertinent information that was easy to understand (not a bunch of lawyer jargon) that helped me to build my case. Melissa was a good listener and made me feel comfortable when talking with her about our case. She was a true blessing to my family and me. I would absolutely use her again and recommend her to friends and family.

Twice I needed advice regarding Regional Center and obtaining therapeutic interventions for my baby. Ms. Amster provided sound, practical advice, based both in law and real-life experience. She was responsive to my needs and helpful.
