About
Melissa Adams attended Saint Bonaventure University on a softball scholarship. After playing Division I softball for two (2) years, she transferred to State University of New York at Geneseo to pursue a degree in English. After graduating with her B.A. in English, Ms. Adams accepted a full scholarship to the New England School of Law, located in Boston, Massachusetts. After her first year in law school, she spent several months studying abroad on the small island of Malta, located in the Mediterranean. Rejuvenated after her travels and studies, Ms. Adams returned to Boston for her second year of law school, during which time she received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Civil Motions Practice. Through a unique consortium program offered by New England School of Law, Ms. Adams spent her third year of law school studying at California Western School of Law located in San Diego, California. She earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the New England School of Law in May 2005. Ms. Adams began her law practice in the civil field, first as a law clerk with the Boston-based firm, Cushner & Bloom, P.C., and later as an attorney with The McMillan Law Firm, APC based out of La Mesa, California. In both positions, Ms. Adams worked in the area of civil litigation, authoring countless motions, briefs and memoranda. Despite her proficiency in civil practice, Ms. Adams acknowledged early on that her calling was criminal defense. It was an internship with the San Diego County Alternate Public Defender's Office in the Spring of 2005 and the mentoring of two highly skilled attorneys with that office that convinced her that criminal defense would be her life-long devotion. It was a combination of the encouragement received from the interviewing attorney/supervisor Ms. Mary Beth Wirkus, and the wisdom and guidance from Ms. Melinda Willits-Sanchez, that inspired Ms. Adams to pursue a career in criminal defense. In the Spring of 2006, Ms. Adams obtained a position with the Law Office of Vikas Bajaj, APC, a premier boutique law firm dedicated to criminal defense located in San Diego, California. Ms. Adams spent the next two and a half years practicing as an attorney primarily in the San Diego area, but also in Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, Imperial and Ventura counties. She handled both state and federal criminal cases. Ms. Adams also continued to practice civil litigation, albeit on a smaller scale. Thousands of court appearances and multiple jury trials later, Ms. Adams relocated to Livermore, California to join the criminal defense firm, The Law Offices of Timothy B. Rien.

When I was incarcerated in 2009, it was the scariest time of my life. I didn't really understand what was happening to me. My family hired Tim Rien to defend me, and he quickly put Melissa on my case. Melissa was always patient with me, taking the time to explain every confusing detail of the legal system, and it's grip it had on me. She treated me with kindness and never made me feel like a criminal. She worked diligently and tirelessly to provide the best defense and get me back home as soon as possible. She was an excellent communicator, keeping my family informed on every minute detail. Even during my long stay in jail awaiting trail, there were countless tiresome visits, she never faltered, being the rock that represented me against the big, scary system. Always professional and considerate, I believe Melissa truly cares for the people she defends. Once I was back at home, she continued to check in on me, interested in how my life is progressing. It is because of her, my life is progressing very well, indeed.
Our son was a minor at the time that we needed a strong criminal defense attorney to assist us in defending felony charges he was facing. Our family attorney referred us to the offices of Tim Rien. After an initial consultation with Mr. Rien, he determined it was best to assign our case to Melissa Adams. We are, to this day, extremely grateful and highly recommend her. Melissa is a knowledgeable and energetic attorney who showed a deep compassion to our case and represented our son in an extremely professional and effective manner in the courtroom. As our case was being heard by a notoriously tough justice, Melissa was able to work with the court and the district attorney to help secure a fair and just decision. Importantly, she was able to do this by being very accessible and taking a personal interest in our son’s situation and background. Through her guidance and encouragement, she quickly earned our trust. She even helped coach our son in what to expect (the good and the bad) in the courtroom and throughout the hearings so he could feel more comfortable throughout the legal process. Most impressively, after the case had ended and charges cleared, Melissa continued to follow up via phone and email with us to check up on his progress. We truly believe that this personal touch has played a tremendous role in our son now doing very well in his development as a responsible citizen and in working to achieve his life long career goals.
There is no better team than Rien, Adams and Cox when it comes to criminal defense. From 2007 to 2009 I was facing some very serious DUI charges, multiple offenses, with possible prison time if convicted. This team literally wrote the book on how Law Enforcement fails to follow their own protocols. When we went to court the DA had zero admissible evidence because they were able to have everything removed because of the fault of law enforcement not following the rules. They gave me a second chance and years later followed up to help remove (expunge) any remaining offenses from my background. I am forever grateful for their efforts. Because of them I have been able to resume my life as a productive part of society. I was given an opportunity to turn my life around, finish college, and now have a high paying job where I can give second chances to others. The process in working with them was painless, I felt comfort in knowing I had a team I could trust, and they were always straight forward and honest with everything that was going on. I could write an entire book on how amazing this team is, they literally saved my life and gave me a second chance... Thank you guys, you are amazing!
My husband needed an attorney a few years back, so we decided to go with Rein, Adams & Cox, LLP, which was known by a different name at the time. We primarily dealt with Melissa, and one thing I can say about her is, she's an amazing lawyer. She got our case resolved, was always there for us anytime we had questions, concerns, whatever it was. Helped us step by step. Anytime I talk with someone about a lawyer I always recommend their office. I can't thank her enough for helping our family. I remember when our case was about to be over, she took time out of her night to give us a wonderful update, that we had been waiting for. She's very professional, always got back to me in a timely manner, like I said amazing. I highly recommend their firm and her as your lawyer.
I used the services of Rien, Adams & Cox, LLP between 2009 and 2016. Melissa Adams was the attorney that I primarily dealt with. I was incredibly pleased with the outcome of my criminal case and would highly recommend their services to others. Melissa went above and beyond, even years after my case was dismissed. Melissa always made herself available and would even check in on me from time to time. Melissa is very caring and is a great all around person. I would absolutely recommend the services of Rien, Adams & Cox, LLP to anyone. I would hire Melissa Adams again if I needed her services. I am very grateful for all of her hard work over the years. Thank You!
Melissa can handle the routine offense with a few simple court appearances and to "cop a plea", but if you are looking for someone who has the intellectual perseverance to muster an adequate defense, then I would move on to a more skilled and responsive attorney. If you are looking for an attorney who will put you first and vigorously defend you at the most crucial times in your case, then I would look elsewhere as well. In fact, when you need her the most, she will not be there for you. My experience with this attorney is that when the case needed her attention the most, at a critical time which would have saved unnecessary pain and suffering, she is vacationing in Mexico instead. Even though she has other attorneys that could easily have assisted her, she chose instead to prioritize a vacation at a crucial juncture in my case which in turn caused undue hardships for me. She never asked one of her partners to stand in for her and she simply left on vacation instead. She is also very poor at responding to direct questions with direct answers and instead uses very vague answers and in some cases, she simply does not respond to the question at all. As an example - I had a very large cash bail I had posted and which I was very concerned about. I sent her correspondence asking for her assurance that it was secure, she simply responded with "It should be". This, along with several other questions and concerns I had asked her about, were never answered directly or succinctly, or even answered at all. In summary, hiring this attorney was a mistake and she failed miserably in prioritizing what was important in my case during a very critical time. I would not hire her again nor would I recommend her to anyone else. I gave her 1 out of 5 stars and even that was difficult for me to do.
We were referred to her by our attorney and were enthusiastic to work with her. However, what transpired was quite unexcusable. She was on a vacation and had her associate help out - he ended up making an erroneous phone call against our wishes, and we had to have another senior attorney ask him to stand down and then they had to fix the situation. Fast forward, despite mistakes we were still charged $2500 with no refund.
