About
I simply enjoy helping people. When I fell into the practice areas of Estate Planning and Elder Law in March of 2011, I truly found my calling. Thinking I would miss the hustle and bustle of being in the loop, wearing a suit every day, and “fighting” in court, I soon realized that there was more to the practice of law. I grew up in Skokie with a younger brother (who is now a Chicago Police Officer) and three half siblings who live in Chicago and Los Angeles. My mother was a schoolteacher and my father sold commercial real estate. I attended Niles West High School and then DePaul University. Upon graduation from John Marshall Law School in May 2009 and after passing the bar, I went out “on my own” for 18 months. I was fortunate enough to share office space with Conrad Szewczyk, a law school friend of my uncle’s, who became a great mentor to me upon starting my legal career. Working side-by-side with Szewczyk, I handled cases spanning all areas of the law, gaining great experience, understanding, and client advocacy. After working with Szewczyk, I took a job with an elder law and estate planning firm on the North Shore where I stayed for 4 years. I became a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) in 2011 and was on the board of the IL Chapter in 2015. In the Spring of 2014, I joined the Board of Directors of Shore Community Services, an organization dedicated to assisting individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. In February 2015, along with my partner Lauren Weldon, I started Margolis Weldon LLC, an estate planning and elder law firm. I assist clients with their Estate Planning and Elder Law needs, including Asset Protection, Special Needs, Trust Administration, Probate, and Guardianship. I counsel my clients from birth to death and ensure that their Estate Planning documents reflect the different stages of their lives. My partner, Lauren, and I safeguard clients' legacies by confirming that Estate Planning documents are appropriately incorporated into their planning goals. My wife and I live with our two children in the Northern Suburbs. Our weekends are filled with walks, riding bikes, trains, chalk, bubbles, and playing in the basement, our son's favorite thing to do.

Matt has been my family's estate planning counsel for a number of years. He originally helped my elderly parents set up their estate and my wife and I decided to make our plan later. He is very skilled at communicating with people and with seniors in particular. I have learned that many people are reluctant to address planning for the future and can be quite obstinate with regard to setting up a will, power of attorney, etc. Matt is clear and concise and able to make everyone comfortable. I have referred Matt to a number of my friends for both their elderly parents as well as themselves. I cannot speak more highly of his expertise and ability.
My wife and I went to Margolis Weldon to have our Trust prepared. From day one Matt Margolis showed that we were not just a client but that we were like family. This concept carried all the way through the Trust process. Every question we had and every topic we discussed was thought about thoroughly and answered in a professional, easy to understand manner. We highly recommend Margolis Weldon for any Estate Planning needs you may have.
Matt completed our estate planning much to the satisfaction to me and my wife. He was extremely helpful and knowledgeable throughout the proposal, consulting, and review meetings. I highly recommend Matt for his professionalism and communication skills.
Our money manager recommended Matt for help and advice on a special needs trust located outside of Illinois. After the initial discussion about the complex issues, I hired him. Everything from the initial contact to completion was timely and thorough. His timely updates were extremely comprehensive. The resolve was not what we desired but his effort, detail, and timeliness was exemplary. Had I lived in Illinois, I would hire him and his firm in a heartbeat for future unresolved issues and advice. His fees are very reasonable.
Matt had been referred by a friend and I had been putting off action for months, there wasn't any rush and I didn't want to think about gloom and doom. I was pushed into action by my wife's death. I was not really thinking at that point. I had three or four different things that needed to be done, including putting everything I owned into a trust to simplify my childrens' lives when I died. Matt was knowlegable and easy to talk to and when we were done I had the trust, two different powers of attorney and a living will all neatly taken care-of. I don't think I could have handled it gracefully if I had not been under stress, but in my state of mind it would have been impossible. Matt handled everything. I gave him lists and the title to my home and truck and when he was done I walked away with a package that allowed me to spend my time having fun in retirement.
Matt recently helped us update our wills, create a trust, update our powers of attorney, etc. We appreciated the tools he has created to assist us in making necessary decisions. Once he was able to determine our needs, he suggested some creative options that we were not aware were possible. Once the legal documents were created, Matt provided excellent advise on the practical steps we needed to take to ensure that our trust was adequately funded and our wishes were communicated to our families, doctors, etc. We are thoroughly satisfied and would recommend Matt to anyone with estate planning or elder law needs.
My wife and I had a wonderful experience with Matt Margolis. My mom had used him for estate planning services and so I had met Matt that way after she passed away. He helped us through that tough time. So when it came time for my wife and I to do our own estate planning, we hired Matt. I got to see the actual planning side then. And once again, Matt was terrific and explained very carefully all the things we should be thinking about. And he has a young family so he had fairly recently been through all this himself so he gave us a lot of great advice. He takes the time with you to make sure you understand the difference between wills and trusts, what does probate mean, etc. He does a really nice job of explaining the legal jargon in terms you can understand. The best part too is that there are no mystery fees. Matt doesn't nickel and dime you for the occasional questions you have once your trust is set up. He'll give you advice on what accounts need ownership or beneficiary changes to protect you and your family from probate. We had a really excellent experience!
Setting up a will and trust is not a fun thing to do. Let's face it, nobody wants to face their own mortality and think about their demise. Well, all that I can say is DO IT and when you've decided to take that step. there's no better guy to help you through that process than Matt Margolis. Matt was thorough, professional, and asked all of the right questions. I don't believe that he left anything open for conjecture. My documents seem perfect and I'm now comfortable knowing that when my day finally comes, my heirs will be able to maneuver the unpleasant task of sorting things out effortlessly. I've already made some updates and Matt handled that in an efficient manner, making the process dare I say... enjoyable?! All of this at a cost that was affordable as well. You can't go wrong with this guy, so quit putting it off!!!
