About

My senior and baby boomer clients often tell me they aren’t too crazy about being labeled as elderly and they don’t relish the idea of seeing an elder law attorney. They fear the word “elder” forces them in a group that is often minimized or stereotyped. They worry that the label “elder” or “senior citizen” immediately decreases their influence not just in the community at large but with their closest friends and family. In some way, just the mention of their advancing age decreases their autonomy and dignity in the eyes of others. If that is truly the reality, then I whole heartedly agree with them. I have found that my clients are powerful, compassionate people. They care about their families, their businesses, their communities. They have strong voices and they want to engage and plan for their later-in-life years. One of my clients recently told me she prefers to be referred to as an “accomplished, woman.” So I decided to run with it. The next time someone asked me what I did, I channeled that client and proudly responded: “I counsel and empower accomplished men and women who want to influence the course of their lives as they age and protect their legacies for their loved ones.” I got a wide eyed look in response, followed by several questions about my practice. I was pleased.

Mary Jo helped my mom and dad finally put into place legal papers that had been put off for years. She was very thorough in her work, and yet also was very friendly and won the confidence of my parents. As a result, our whole family feels very much at peace about our future, and are grateful for the hard work that Mary Jo did on our behalf.

My mother and I, retained Mary Jo Broussard Speier to help us establish a relatively complicated trust fund. The service and counsel we received from Ms. Speier was exceptional. She looked into all aspects of our situation, and requirements, and determined the best course of action. In doing this she identified potential problems and went about taking steps to address them proactively. The work we had done was relatively complicated (at least I thought so) and could have been both confusing, and stressful, to my mother and myself. To her credit, Ms. Speiers made sure she explained the process in advance, as well as provided us with detailed updates along the way. Further, whenever we had a question, she came back with the answer in less that 24 hours, in most instances within just one or two hours. When the trust was completed she took the time to sit down with us and explain it in detail before it was signed. Then, a week or so later when I had few follow-up questions, she addressed them right away. In sum we were very pleased with Ms. Speier's professionalism and responsiveness throughout the project. We would certainly recommend her to friends and family.

I found a recommendation for Mary Jo Broussard Speier on our neighborhood listerv. My husband and I needed a revocable trust, a will, and a power of attorney. I'm not sure how complicated our situation was, but, nonetheless, it was fraught with familial issues that we wanted handled delicately but expediously. Mary Jo was beyond patient with our hesitations, our lack of experience, and our overall wishes to cover as many, if not all, contingencies. We were accorded the kind of respect and understanding I'd want from any professional. She set the bar much higher than any other lawyer I've dealt with. I trust her skill and legal wherewithall and absolutely appreciate her gentle interactive style.

Mary Jo is outstanding. Compassionate, clear, thorough, quick in her work. She was highly recommended as a family law specialist when my husband and I (who had woefully neglected all the legal paperwork) needed wills, powers of attorney, a trust and more. I, in turn have recommended her to my dearest friend who was equally pleased with the quality of Mary Jo's work and the pleasure of working with her.

Mary Jo is obviously highly knowledgeable in the elder care field. I sought advice on a Medicaid related issue, and she handled my inquiry promptly, efficiently and with sensitivity and candor. I happen to be an out-of-state practicing attorney, with no knowledge of elder care law. I couldn't have been more satisfied with the service she rendered to me, and plan to retain her.

Mary Jo is an essential partner for me. She helps and advises on eldercare for my mother, who has dementia/Alzheimer's. Mary Jo is responsive, intuitive, and strategic, and has broad and deep legal skills and understanding of eldercare issues, which can be overwhelming and terrifying for families dealing with ongoing disability from dementia. Her personal, thoughtful approach makes you feel like you're her only client. I'm very lucky to have her help.

My Estate Plan set up by Mary Jo helped us avoid probate and an unnecessary tax burden. Every aspect of the plan was explained in detail and in language that my wife and I could easily understand. Mary Jo is the ultimate professional we were hoping for.

We contacted Ms. Speier when another attorney, who had written a trust for us did not return our calls. The trust she created did not protect our assets in the way she had said it would. Ms. Speir help my family to understand that trust, and why it did not meet our needs. She very competently figured out what we had to do to extricate ourselves from the problems that document created, and set a new plan for us into motion. She helped us to organize our finances and wrote a new trust.

My mother suffered a fall and was not able to fully walk on her own again. She was unable to participate in rehabilitation due to her progressing struggle with dementia. It was a very difficult decision but I had to put my mother into a long term care facility. I worked with the benefits coordinator at the nursing home to fill out the financial aid application and provide the five years of support documentation that was required. The application was rejected and I was given a very long complicated list of additional requirements and not a lot of time to provide the information. I was in a total panic. I needed a lawyer to help navigate the complicated application process to qualify for financial aid. I took a chance went online and thank the heavens I came across the name Mary Jo Broussard Speier. I was able to get an appointment quickly and met with Mary Jo to review all the challenges I was having with the application process. Mary Jo is very knowledgeable about the financial application process. She is organized, detail oriented and most importantly very patient. Mary Jo worked down the complicated list I had and was able to pull together the needed information. She provided an organized detailed packet to include with the re-submitted application. In the end our application was accepted and my mother was able to remain in the long term care facility and is receiving the care she needs. I am very happy I was able to find and work with Mary Jo. I highly recommend her and continue to retainer her services as we had to reapply for 2016 coverage.
