We hired Maria Zelaya just before we were supposed to appear in Miami-Dade County Juvenile Court, and an hour before there was supposed to be a hearing to have my children placed into foster care. Maria met with us, got our version of the story; she met with the Florida DCF attorneys and got their version of the story. And then she stood in front of the judge and really tried to make it clear that the "facts" that were being presented by Florida DCF were not quite as they appeared. She really went out of her way to negotiate and resolve issues on our behalf with Florida DCF, and more than once, she was able to present alternatives to the judge that were more of what was in our family's best interest, than what Florida DCF was proposing.
