About

Marcia Hofmann is an attorney who litigates, writes, and speaks about a broad range of technology law issues including computer security, electronic privacy, free expression, and intellectual property. She recently launched a boutique law practice focusing on these topics. She tweets about law and technology issues at @marciahofmann. Marcia is special counsel to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit digital rights advocacy organization based in San Francisco, California. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Prior to starting her law practice, Marcia was a senior staff attorney at EFF focusing on digital civil liberties issues. In addition to cutting-edge litigation, her work included counseling and defending researchers, hackers and others who need help navigating the murky laws surrounding access to computers and digital information.  She also co-founded EFF’s open government litigation project. Documents made public though her government transparency work have been reported by the New York Times, Washington Post, National Public Radio, Fox News, and CNN, among others. Before joining EFF, Marcia was staff counsel and director of the Open Government Project at the Electronic Privacy Information Center. EPIC is a non-profit educational center in Washington, DC that works to focus public attention on emerging privacy and civil liberties issues. Marcia’s alma maters are Mount Holyoke College and the University of Dayton School of Law.
