About
Proactive Family Law solutions combines my more than 20 years experience as a lawyer and mediator with results based strategies for helping clients navigate divorce and family law matters. The clients I work with want to divorce or separate in a way that doesn’t cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars or emotionally harm their children. I use a values based approach to help clients work past their reactionary patterns and fear to create a legal and personal strategy with realistic solutions to get what they truly value. This legal and strategic work with clients is structured that meets their needs- whether hourly or project consulting, limited representation (working on only certain matters in your case) or full representation.

I went through a tough divorce last year (they're all tough, especially if you need a lawyer). Originally hired a different attorney who was uncommunicative, generally apathetic and unprepared. I switched to Lori Barkus on a recommendation from a friend, and was amazed at the difference. She returned emails and phone calls almost immediately (and when she was unavailable, her acumenical assistant did), and even though her caseload was probably high, she still seemed to care about mine. I highly recommend Lori.
Several years ago I was faced with having to file for divorce and didn't know where to turn. I obtained Lori's number through a recommendation and met with her to explain my particular case. Lori was professional, competent, understanding and fair. I ended up hiring Lori as my counselor for my divorce and could not have been any happier with the outcome. She kept me well informed and provided through answers to all questions. She provided sound advice during a very emotional and confusing time. Due to my divorce being "complicated" (as if any aren't), it was great to have a very knowledgeable and experienced counselor in my corner. Through her superior representation I was able to reach an amicable and fair dissolution of marriage. Unfortunately, over the years I have found a number of friends who found themselves in need of a Divorce Attorney. I always refer them to Attorney Barkus knowing they will be in competently represented. Thank you Lori for all your hard work.
Lori did a wonderful job assisting me through the divorce process from start to finish. She is very knowledgeable and easy to contact for any questions. I would recommend her in this capacity to anyone who is looking for someone they can trust and depend on.
She went beyond and above for me and did everything in her power to get the best result out of this divorce As she succeeded in Doing that and I would highly recommend her for anyone who wants to be treated fairly and get divorced
I originally met Lori during a consultation I scheduled to get guidance on post-divorce laws and strategy. I was so impressed with Lori and her professional knowledge, I hired her for my Alimony Modification 5+ years later. Alimony Modification is an emotional and stressful process. Lori was prompt in responding to my questions and was also very calming person for me during this process. Lori practices the concept of "value billing" which is an extremely fair and reasonable price for the work performed. I highly recommend Lori.
Lori did a wonderful job representing me in my alimony modification that stretched nearly a year. She was nice when it was appropriate, and she was tough when it was needed. She got the job done better than I had expected representing me during mediation, avoiding an expensive trial. I would highly recommend her services to anyone.
I contacted Lori at the recommendation of someone on Facebook because I was having major issues with an attorney I had hired to handle a child custody case, I initially did a phone consultation to explain my situation and concerns with my current attorney. Right away I knew the recommendation was a good one, she listened intently as I explained what was happening and answered any and all questions with succinct and informative answers. Lori pointed out things that I had been erroneously told by my current attorney and gave me hope when my current attorney was making me despair. Based on my consultation I hired her as my new attorney and things took a wonderful turn for the good, she was always available when called or emailed and the communication level was far better than what I had experienced with my old attorney. Her insight into the dynamics of the proceedings was STELLAR and I credit her with the wonderful outcome of my case, she walked with me through it step by step and now today I am in my daughter’s life and things are going splendidly. I truly can’t overstate how well Lori handled my case, you would do yourself a disservice to not retain her as your counsel.
We reached out to Lori who listened and really understood what we were going through. She is a huge supporter of equal parenting and that is what we needed since my husband’s ex tried to keep their son from his dad at no fault of his own. Lori kept it straight with us and didn’t make empty promises. She worked hard and was thorough and was respected at the court by the judge, etc. We ended up with a pretty good parenting plan and if we ever need anything regarding it, she is easily reachable. We are thankful to have found her.
First, I want to say I would not have an "Iron Clad" parenting plan that protects my son's interest if it weren't for Lori. She saved my son from becoming another statistic in a broken system that allows mothers to push fathers out of their children's life. Second she is the only attorney I know that is actively involved in the movement and helps to shine a light on fathers that actually want to be Fathers to their children. God bless this woman. She got my son back in my life the way he needs to be. She is the most professionally honest attorney I have met in the family law circle and is well known throughout the court for what she does. I was proud to have her represent us in court and she did so flawlessly. There wasn't an objection that she could not rebut with fact and candor, it truly was awesome to see her work in the court room. Now that I have praised her...she was able to layout an enforceable parenting plan while my son is out of state to the point where the Judge ruled in our favor and it is practically 50/50. As a result there is no child support payments which we use to fly my son down to visit every holiday, every vacation, every 3 day weekend, and every summer. Truly a blessing and Avery gets the best of all her hard work. She understands what needs to get done and is not afraid to do so one bit. I have recommended Lori to everyone that needs an attorney and she is our Family Law attorney. I will not trust anyone else with the my son's and my rights in a court of law. Lori I thank you again and again and again.
I connected with Ms Barkus several months ago regarding my pending case. My case is what you might call a "high temperature" case. I don't get along with my ex, barely speak to her, and she has made my life utterly miserable. When I went to Lori I felt I had nobody else to turn to. It turns out I didn't need anyone else. She has put me at ease, earned my confidence and has managed the other side in the process, lowering the temperature at least a bit. Ms Barkus is a pleasure to work with. I had other attorneys before her but she is by and large the best that I've seen and worked with. Lori Barkus has many good traits that I find to be helpful in these situations. She's thorough (prepared for each conference and hearing like it's her last), respectful to a VERY ADVERSARIAL ADVERSARY and clearly passionate about what she does. She doesn't make outlandish promises but tells you the truth. I found her to be extremely honest-says what she means, means what she says. While I've found other attorneys in this field to be condescending and aloof, Ms Barkus is neither. She's quite the opposite. Very down to earth. On a skill set level, clearly her best lawyering involves negotiating. She tells you right up front this is about negotiating, not winning. I found that to be refreshing and honest. Judges and opposing counsel clearly respect her, I've seen that firsthand. As a client in a bad situation, you feel like you're putting your life in your family lawyer's hands. I feel very comfortable having done that with Ms Barkus. She doesn't over react to adversarial nonsense and has put me (a high maintenance client) at ease. My outcome so far has been good and I have the utmost confidence that things will proceed along the same path. I would recommend Ms Barkus to anyone going through the brutal process of divorce. You will be glad you did.
