The Caraways are avid St. Louis Cardinal fans.Matt is a sports enthusiast who enjoys baseball, softball, golf, basketball, and football.He also enjoys waterfowl hunting and is a member of Ducks Unlimited.MILITARY SERVICEMatt was an 18-year old freshman at Eastern Illinois University when the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack occurred in New York. He enlisted in the Illinois Air National Guard shortly thereafter.Matt served 7 years in the Air Force and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his first year of law school Matt was deployed to the Middle East where he served his country in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Matt was awarded many decorations including Outstanding Airman of the Year 2004, Basic Training Honor Graduate, and Expert Marksman (M-16/M-4). He was recognized by the Air Force as a Hometown Hero in 2007.After returning from his Operation Enduring Freedom deployment Matt continued his legal education at the University of Illinois and accepted an internship with the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Office (JAG) at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.At the end of his enlistment and voluntary extension Matt was honorably discharged in 2008, so he could pursue his legal career.
