We had a very good experience with Kerry, but we can see why some people do not. Based on our experience we see the difference is whether you are prepared to have an intelligent conversation with a lawyer or if you bring more drama than facts to a conversation. Kerry was referred to us by the Oregon State Bar referral service which provides a 30 minute initial meeting for $35. The call to set up an appointment was rough because Kerry was very blunt. We assumed he was trying to quickly determine if we were looking to file a frivolous suit or if we had a legitimate claim. We quickly showed that we had a legitimate claim. We were fine with his bluntness because we would rather a lawyer get to the point quickly instead of trying to build a superficial relationship with a client that leads to a lot of wasted time and billable hours. That quick conversation led to the actual 30 minute phone call. We explained the issue and he talked us through scenarios. He clearly explained what we should do next and that we did not need to hire him to do it for us. It was a huge sign of his professionalism that he gave his experienced opinion without insisting that we needed to hire him. When any professional will legitimately help a client and walk away from money on the table because it is the right thing to do then you should know that the person has integrity. Our advice to you is be clear on what happened to lead to you wanting to hire a lawyer and what you want before you call Kerry. Be ok with any initial bluntness as a sign that he is trying to not waste your time and his. That ‘getting to the point’ approach is what saves you a lot of money.
I've been having landlord issues and went through Oregon State Bar's Lawyer Referral. Once I told him I used the state for the referral he was negative and had zero communication. For the referral all consultations are at most $35 he stated it would cost me $50. Or an advance money order but would give no information about how to get it to him. He wouldn't even send an email with the information about the steps to take for his help. He stated that since there is zero money in helping tenants through this referral and is also a waste of time and money. JUST FOR INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO PAY HIM. I am not exaggerating! I immediately told him that this was not the right fit for me and hung up. Don't waste your time or money on Kerry Chipman.
