About

Kelly chose to enter the practice of law because she enjoys meeting people and learning about them and their families, as well as their histories and cultures.  Every person who enters our firm doors has a story and Kelly loves to hear those stories.   Specifically, Kelly was drawn to the estate planning and elder law practice areas because they allow her to interact with families on an intimate basis and to assist them in their times of need.  By looking to our firm for your estate planning and asset protection needs, Kelly hopes you not only find an attorney for your lifetime, but also an extended family member and friend in whom you may confide.  It is in building such client relationships that Kelly finds her practice truly fulfilling. As an experienced estate planning, asset protection and long term care planning attorney, Kelly understands that you have worked hard your entire life to build your assets and provide financial stability for your family members and loved ones.  Additionally, she understands that life’s uncertainties may surprise you, no matter how much you believe you have safeguarded your family and your assets.  Kelly’s legal experience equips her with various legal strategies which may provide you with the security you need and desire, whether for yourself, your loved ones, or your estate.  Regardless of your life situation, Kelly is committed to understanding your issues and concerns and identifying the legal means available to reach your goals. On a more personal note, Kelly was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, and relocated to Wilmington after graduating law school.  During her personal time, Kelly enjoys playing with her dog, Barrister (a West Highland White Terrier), in an attempt to keep his precocious nature to a minimum.  When not worn out by Barrister, Kelly enjoys running, swimming, and spending time with family and friends.  Kelly particularly enjoys spending time with her family at Oak Island, especially in the spring and fall when the weather is beautiful and the beaches are no longer crowded.  Additionally, when Kelly is able to take an extended vacation, she enjoys traveling internationally.  In the past, Kelly has traveled to Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China, Cambodia, and Laos.  Most recently Kelly enjoyed a family trip with her father and brother to the Galapagos Islands and Peru’s Machu Picchu.

As my parents struggled with the financial burden of my father's ongoing medical expenses, social workers told me there were no resources available to help. Yet, within minutes of meeting Kelly Shovelin, she ascertained that my father, a veteran of the Korean War, was indeed eligible for Veteran's Benefits. Kelly skillfully guided us through the arduous application and approval process (in our case, it took seven months!) with a steadfast and thorough approach. Thanks to her efforts, my father now receives a monthly disability pension of $1949.00 per month to defray his medical expenses. Best of all, my parents and I have restored peace of mind, knowing they won't be financially crippled by my father's ongoing medical costs.
