About
Katherine, who goes by Katie, is dedicated to providing families with personalized representation and is especially passionate about helping families with children. Katie helps families navigate: the special education process in schools; divorce; pre and post marital agreements; adoptions; alimony; child support; custody; estate planning; guardianships; and collaborative divorces. She encourages clients to become strong advocates for their family and children. She also is trained as a Best Interest Attorney and Child Privilege Attorney. Katie grew up in Montgomery County and attended Loyola University, Maryland. She graduated with a double major in Communications and Spanish. While at Loyola, Katie interned for the Honorable John C. Themelis, in Baltimore City’s Circuit Court. After college, Katie worked for Discovery Communications, LLC in the corporate legal department. While there, she further developed an interest in the law while working on acquisitions and the going-public project. She was awarded the Pathfinder Award for her work on the going-public project. Katie attended Francis King Carey’s University of Maryland School of Law. While there, she was dedicated to the Clinical Law Program. As a Rule 16 attorney, she worked on the Prisoner Assistance Project, was the primary student attorney on family law cases, helped plan and execute the Annual Veteran’s Conference, helped write the Maryland High School Mock Trial Competition case, and was a teaching assistant for the Criminal Defense Clinic. Outside of work, for the past six years, Katie has served as Chairperson and parent member for the Local Interagency Coordinating Council for Montgomery County’s Infants and Toddler Program. Additionally, she speaks at events to raise awareness for Children’s National in Washington DC, and speaks at various Washington, DC events about her experience with raising a medically-fragile child with special needs, work-life balance, and special education.

Ms. Thomas was a pleasure to work with during my case. She was always available and quickly returned my calls and emails. She is an excellent advocate for my son and she won my case for him. He now has all the help he needs in school because of her determination. I would highly recommend her for a child advocate in school.
