About
Jennifer is certified as a Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. She earned a B.A. in Law and Society from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her law degree from Santa Clara University. Jennifer is a member of the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, www.acfls.org, and member of the Santa Clara County Bar Association and is a member of the Family Law Executive Committee of the Santa Clara County Bar Association. Jennifer has lectured at multiple seminars for the Santa Clara County Bar Association, and Santa Clara University School of Law, and also serves as Judge Pro Tem for the Santa Clara County Superior Court. With nearly twenty (20) years as a family law attorney, Jennifer has acted both as litigator and mediator. She has successfully handled a variety of complex family law cases involving domestic violence, child custody/visitation, child support, spousal support/alimony, financial property, and divorce. She also handles other areas of family law, including paternity, postnuptial agreements, prenuptial agreements, annulment, legal separation, and stepparent adoptions and mediation. Dealing with real people, helping them solve their problems, and making a real difference in their lives and the lives of their families is important to her.Well before earning her J.D. at Santa Clara University School of Law, Jennifer knew she wanted to be a litigator. By the time she graduated and was admitted to practice law in the state of California as a member of the State Bar of California, she had already logged endless hours in the courtroom working for the Santa Cruz County Public Defender’s Office. Prior to that, Jennifer had worked for the Santa Clara County Alternate Defender’s Office. Although Jennifer has experience working as an attorney in the areas of family law, criminal law, and civil litigation, it is family law that is her passion. Thus, she has chosen to practice exclusively in the area of family law, founding Mello & Pickering, LLP in San Jose, California with close friend and law partner Traci Pickering.Jennifer’s interest and exposure to family law was sparked at the age of 15 when her own parents filed for divorce. She later joined her high school’s mock trial team, acting as team prosecutor, which cemented her dream to become a litigating attorney. Jennifer understands the stress and problems that can arise when dealing with the legal process in the area of family law —for both parents and children. As a family law attorney, she wants to make sure that her clients have the tools, information, and options that they need to successfully deal with their family matter. She is married and has three children. When she is not busy practicing law or spending time with her family, Jennifer enjoys traveling, reading books, and visiting with friends.

I have worked with Jennifer off and on for over 12 years. She represented me when I had to go to court on 6 separate motions regarding issues with my ex-husband, plus 4 additional motions with him that she was able to negotiate so that we didn't have to end up at court. Her greatest strength is her ability to craft written contracts and agreements that protect your interests and your family. Her agreements withstood the test of time as my ex-husband repeatedly tried to break them or go around them, but she had written them so that they stood up solidly in court. Jennifer is calm and logical; she works with the facts of the case and strips away the drama. Provide her with facts and, if possible, the documentation to back up what you say, and she will be a powerful advocate for you. Jennifer has immense integrity, which is hard to find in an area of law where there can be a lot of mud slinging. It was great to work with someone who used her deep knowledge of the law, strong attention to detail, and powerful skill with words to win cases. One area where Jennifer is less familiar is if your case has complex financial issues. You will want to pull in a CPA or someone else to partner on that. However, I've found that most lawyers are not as strong in the math arena, so you would likely need to do this regardless of who you hire. Overall, I was fortunate to work with someone extremely smart, honest, pragmatic, and focused on getting me the best outcome. If needed, would I hire her again? Well, considering that in a way I've hired her 10 times already and gotten very optimal results, it's pretty obvious that I would definitely hire her again.
Jennifer and her whole team at Mello Pickering were amazing from day one. They were professional, caring and genuinely looked out for my best interests. Navigating a divorce can be highly charged and emotional and Jennifer made sure to keep things moving forward in a way that did not enflame an already difficult situation. Needless to say, divorce is expensive but Jennifer and her team made sure to keep things direct and to the point in order to not increase my costs. I really can't say enough good things about Jennifer and everyone at Mello Pickering for helping me through an extremely contentious divorce in the best way possible. Don't look any further if you are in need of the best family lawyer in San Jose.
Jennifer Mello was my attorney in my divorce case. She did an absolutely stellar job and I am pleased with the outcome of my case. The other party in my case was extremely uncooperative but Jennifer's representation helped move my case along and, ultimately, conclude. The best part is that Jennifer listened to and respected my needs. I walked away with a temporary spousal support order that has been extremely helpful. She advocated for me every step of the way.
Jennifer helped me navigate an extremely complicated divorce agreement. She was able to renegotiate the financial/support terms without us having to go to court. She saved me a considerable amount of money, time and stress. Jennifer is thoughtful, creative and does what is best for her clients. She is incredibly responsive, with a calm demeanor which is so important in these types of situations. I highly recommend Jennifer and will hire her again for any future situations.
Jennifer and her entire support team are top notch. Not only did she go in great detail during the first inquiry/visit, making sure I knew exactly the entire process, the money that would be spent and any and all 'could be potential' road blocks, and she and her team updated me throughout the entire divorce process making sure I knew where I stood at all times. If you want to win and come out on top, the answer is Jennifer! She knows the processes and system inside and out, where most is won! Top notch, professional and confident! TY Jennifer.
Jennifer is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and adept in the courtroom. I have been a client for nearly a decade, and wouldn't think of hiring a different attorney. She has even advised me when not to use her services! Seriously, she is the best.
I came to Jennifer and her team with the unique challenge of obtaining a grandparent visitation order that would preserve the deep and meaningful bond I have with my young granddaughters. Cancer had taken my daughter's life at a young age, and my efforts to maintain reasonable visitation with her young children (my granddaughters) were being unreasonably/unlawfully blocked by the children's father and new stepmother. Jennifer quickly sprang into action and obtained court-ordered interim visitation. Within a year, Jennifer obtained a Stipulation and Order for permanent visitation that even exceeded my initial hopes. In the 14+ years that I have worked as a paralegal in the local court system, I have had the opportunity to work with and observe numerous attorneys. I can tell you that Jennifer has a wonderful balance of empathy, sensitivity, fairness, integrity, proficiency and professionalism rarely seen in attorneys. It felt wonderfully validating to receive this kind of legal and moral support. I now feel a tremendous sense of relief and gratitude knowing that my granddaughters have the assurance that the loving bond that they shared with me prior to their mother's death is protected, even though their mother is no longer here to support it herself.
After utilizing a sub-par attorney during my divorce, Jennifer Mello was recommended for assisting with my post final judgment issues. Jennifer has been a joy to work with. She has been flexible to meet my needs providing representation in court and then serving only as a consultant between hearings. She has provided knowledgeable advice and excellent representation resulting in much more favorable judgments than I would have received without her.
Jennifer and the rest of her firm are awesome. They kept a woman with a mental illness from taking my son away. When the other party went below the belt, they kept it pro and beat it out. They helped the judge see through the lies and showed the truth on both sides. Words cannot express my gratitude to all of them. As a man it was empowering to have an office staffed entirely by women come to your side. It was a huge relief when they told me that i had way more rights that I thought. Totally changed my attitude. I only wish i'd contacted them sooner. Probably would've saved me a lot of time and money if I'd been informed early on. I didn't always follow their recommendations and wish i had. This caused some more work for everybody. My only tips to a future client would be to work on clairty. Pre-game and post-game before and after to know what to expect. Having never been to court before, I wish I'd made it a point to go sit in on a public hearing before my first one. Just to know what to expect. Also, Text messages. There are ways to get them off your phone (software like Phoneview for mac) There was one specific text message that absolutely turned the tide. I missed it, but Jennifer caught it. They ain't cheap, but every day i see my son is worth every penny.
I never write reviews and this is my first. I have many specific situations, where I was disappointed with my lawyer and it will be a long list. If I could pick up one specific situation, here it is: my lawyer's office arrange a conference call with my lawyer, forensic acct and me. Conference call was about 70 min, but 25 min of that time the phone line didn't work. My lawyer's office couldn't figure out how to connect us, finally forensic's office offer theirs conference bridge. After we done, I look at my cell and phone call lasted 42 min, I ask both sides if they please adjust a bill to actual length of call. But both sides charged me 70 min. It was my lawyer's office fault, and she should take out at least her time, and even offer to cover 20 min of forensic time. But not, I end up paying for someones mistake and paid double ( extra $400 for nothing) . After previous unfair charges, I didn't want even ask anymore. If there any slight disagreement with Jennifer, she keep saying, that I should find another attorney. Considering that she was no help on my case with too many charges, I finally quit.
