About
Janet L. Hoffman grew up in northwest Iowa. She attended public school in Milford, Iowa playing sports, taking part in extra-curricular activities and working part-time. At a young age she learned the value of hard work and seeing a job through to the end. She attended Buena Vista College and graduated Summa cum Laude with a Political Science degree. After earning her undergraduate degree, Janet was accepted at the University of Iowa, College of Law, and received a JD Degree, With Distinction in 1990.Janet began her legal career while still in law school. Throughout her three years of law school, she worked for the Polk County Attorney’s Office, the Johnson County Attorney’s Office and the Benton County Attorney’s Office as a prosecuting intern, prosecuting simple misdemeanors, including both bench and jury trials. Janet first-chaired several criminal jury trials at the District Court level as well. Janet also worked as a legal intern for a prominent family law attorney in Iowa City. After law school, Janet worked as an Associate for a law firm in Minnesota where she gained experience in family law, criminal defense and real estate law, including authoring title opinions. Janet then joined the Child Support Recovery Unit in Spencer, Iowa, working as an Assistant County Attorney and representing the state in paternity establishment, obtaining child support orders and enforcement of child support orders. In 1994, she joined the Iowa Attorney General's office as an Assistant Attorney General. Janet has exceptionally broad-based experience, with strong contributions in many areas while with the Iowa Department of Justice. In addition to extensive work in estate planning, drafting wills and trusts and real estate, Janet also has experience in small business formation. Janet has authored four books, lectured frequently throughout the state regarding HIPAA and taught legal courses at the college level. Ms. Hoffman has extensive experience in appellate practice including arguing cases before the Iowa Court of Appeals and the Iowa Supreme Court. Janet opened up her solo practice in May, 2017 and represents clients primarily in the area of Elder Law, which includes, will, trusts, estate planning, Medicaid eligibility for long-term care, probate, and guardianship and conservatorship actions.
