About
I have been an attorney since 1981, the first seven years in Portland, Oregon, where I was a staff attorney for a bank. Most of that work was in the area of commercial finance, but for two years I worked as a personal trust officer in a trust department. I have been a member of Andrews & Young, PC and its predecessor firms since 1991. During my early years with the firm I continued my work for financial institutions, but for many years now have focused my practice in the area of estate planning, probate, and what is called elder law, which is a broad way of looking at the legal and financial challenges we face as we age. I have been active in many Bar Association, municipal and community groups over the years, as may be set out in other areas of this site or on our firm's website. We have a very capable staff who help us work with clients to put plans in place for incapacity and death and settling estates. Sometimes we work with clients to anticipate and find ways to pay for long term care, which can include ways to seek eligibility for medicare and medicaid while protecting assets to the extent possible. Some of our work involves complex legal plans, but many are simple, and we favor simple approaches unless there is some material goal to be achieved in pursuing a more complex route. We are happy to help clients with real estate transactions such as purchases and sales. From time to time I help clients resolve disputes including business disputes, in a continuation of my years spent in the banking and commercial finance and bankruptcy world, and some of that experience is useful in my work in trusts and estates, and settling of estates. I enjoy getting to know our clients and to help them get appropriate plans in place, which sometimes leads them to feel relieved they have attended to these things. We think there is value in working with our clients over the years to continue to review, and as possible revise and improve, their plans.

My husband and I are in our lated 60s. It was important to us to put an estate plan in place and avoid probate. Jim Young was highly recommended by our financial advisor. Our initial consultation with Jim was very informative and we felt comfortable hiring him as our estate planning lawyer. We met Jim several times, had many discussions, and Jim presented us with several options to met our specific needs. Because this was a second marriage for my husband and I and we each had children and grandchildren from a previous marriage, our circumstances presented a more complex plan. Jim navigated us through this conversation and process with patience and thoughtfulness.
