About
I was admitted to practice in 1977 in Arizona. I attended Arizona State University for my Bachelors Decree, then spent two years in the United States Army before obtaining my law decree from the University of Arizona in 1977. I have always practiced in private practice handling jury trials in criminal cases and civil cases. I also handled litigation in the bankruptcy court, probate court and family court. About fifteen years ago I limited my practice to all aspects of family law, together with simple wills, medical powers of attorney and living wills. I was a family law specialist for ten (10) years, but at this point in my career do not have that designation. I encourage you to go to my website - leatherlawoffice.com for additional information.

I consulted Jim Leather to not end but maintain my marriage and come up with a contract that was good and healthy for my husband and myself. It addresses our assets and my business. I felt very listened to and respected working with Jim. Jim was recommended to me for contracts. I did not know he handled other aspects. But he was no-nonsense. Maintained good use of our time. But very much unlike other Lawyers I interviewed, really listened and thought about me. We are creating a trust and Jim was a step towards doing it the way we want it done. I am very fortunate I was referred to him. Work with Jim. Dont waste time. Dont get half of what you wanted. Save yourself trouble. Go with Jim as he was reasonable with price and just plain good at his job.
Before being introduced to this outstanding lawyer, my petition to divorce my wife was in the hands of a so-called number one, aggressive, law firm. After wasting a year and $100,000 in legal fees, it was refreshing to meet the non-aggressive and very professional Jim Leather. A man with integrity and without the need to impress his brilliance upon his client, Mr. Leather took only four months (with realistic fees) to obtain my decree. The settlement number was significantly less than I had offered to settle a year earlier when still a client of the aggressive, expensive lawyer so; in essence, I recovered the fees squandered in the wasted year. Thank you again, Jim. I will continue to recommend you highly!
Attorney Jim Leather represented me in my divorce and child custody case. He was very thorough in understanding the complex details of my case. His office, myself and Attorney Leather worked together to address the issues, concerns and proceedings. I am very pleased with the results and have recommended him and will continue to do so.
Jim Leather represented me in my divorce. He made the whole process very easy for me, in a caring respectful manner. Always gave me options and the best legal advice. His staff is also caring and respectful. I have and will still recommend this law firm!
Attorney Leather handled my divorce case in a very professional manner. He was very cooperative, worked with me as a member of his team, carefully listened to my issues and developed a winning strategy. We won the case in the Superior Court, Court of Appeals and in the Arizona Supreme Court.
Hired him and his firm for a child custody case in 2007. The firm was more intererested in my retainer fee then representing me properly for their service. Getting response from them was like pulling teeth. They also were very negligent when the day of our court cases they would send someone new to represent us. We would go sit in a room for 5 minutes to get this new lawyer up to speed. Just minutes before going in front a judge. These lawyers didn't know what they were doing. This firm switched us out with three lawyers and still did a bad job. Had to hire another attorney. Didn't know I could make a report to the state bar, if I known sooner, I would have. This firm was misleading and failed to represent us responsibility and fairly. I have moved on from this mess, but I think people deserve to know a fair review of this actual lawyer.
A few years back, I hired Mr. Leather to take over my child custody case 2 months before the case went to court. Mr. Leather came highly recommended, which is what I needed seeing that this lawyer was coming in at the tail end of the case and he needed to be quick on his feet to catch up. As he was dealing with my case, he would occasionally roll his eyes at the issues and he was very emotionless. I could tell he was in it simply for the money and lacked any feeling towards me, my child or our situation. Mr. Leather was just there to take a quick case, make the case go to court, and watch the outcome, whether positive or negative. The outcome did not really matter to him. I was not adequately coached on what to say during the hearing and he let a huge piece of testimony be thrown out of the court on hearsay and did not fight to keep that testimony in the court. My ex and his lawyer won and it was an easy win. Mr. Leather rolled over and played dead in the courtroom. I was not represented properly. Mr. Leather was there to take the money, file the paperwork and show up to court. That's all. He did not fight for me and did not help me. It might have been different if I hired Mr. Leather from the beginning of the case. I was counting on his glowing reviews and recommendations to hit the ground running and he could not do that for me. The first time he rolled his eyes at pieces of the case, I should have ended our business and sought a different lawyer who would have more fire and compassion for my case. To this day, I'm still dealing with the consequences of his poor representation.
