About
James F. Douthat focuses much of his practice on commercial real estate and commercial and bankruptcy law. Jim has counseled a number of commercial real estate developments, including Valley View Mall, Valley View Crossing, the Sheraton Hotel and Wal-Mart. In addition to real estate and general corporate representation, Jim offers extensive bankruptcy experience throughout Virginia. The Roanoke native joined the firm of Hazlegrove, Dickinson & Rea as an associate in 1967. He took a leave of absence to go on active duty in the United States Army as Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps. The Hazlegrove law firm merged with the Woods Rogers in 1985.He is Martindale AV rated. Jim is a graduate of Hampden Sydney College and Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude, was vice president of his class and was the lead articles editor of the Washington & Lee Law Review.Jim’s community involvement includes the History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia and The Achievement Center. He’s a strong advocate of the Roanoke Valley’s growing greenway network while representing and serving as a member of the board of the Hanging Rock Battlefield & Railway Preservation Foundation.
