About

Attorney Harold Cogdell, Jr. founded the Law Offices of Harold Cogdell, Jr., P.C. on April 1, 1998 after having worked as an Assistant District Attorney following graduation from N.C. Central University School of Law.  Since that time, Harold, along with the aid of his dedicated staff, has represented thousands of clients in State and Federal Court before judges and juries.  Being a former Assistant District Attorney in Mecklenburg County and law clerk with the United States Attorney's Office (EDNC), Harold understands the complexities of navigating through delicate investigatory or regulatory processes. This experience has made Harold Cogdell, Jr. a seasoned defense attorney that consistently seeks to favorably and promptly influence the outcome of the legal challenge faced by you or your organization. Harold has successfully represented clients in Federal and State Courts throughout the State of North Carolina (from Buncombe to New Hanover County) and in Georgia, Arizona and Kansas.  In many instances, Harold has been able to assist law enforcement officials to quickly sift through unfounded allegations, flush out key relevant facts and bring closure to an investigation before formal charges are sought by prosecutorial agencies that may cause irreparable harm to a client’s reputation.  Attorney Cogdell is licensed to practice in the North Carolina, before the Fourth Circuit United States Court of Appeals and in United States District Court for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina. The Personal Story: http://www.qcitymetro.com/news/articles/an_only_child_finds_his_big_family074314800.cfm Public Service: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/05/26/2326386/commissioner-lays-out-budget-plan.html#storylink=misearch

Attorney Cogdell was a very good choice in representation regarding my legal situation. He negotiated with the DA and two felony charges were dismissed. He was knowledgeable about the law, experienced and truly understood the court system. Everyone seem to know and respect him. He seemed genuinely concerned about the impact the charges would have on my future and professional reputation (he also helped me to understand and consider the rules of professional conduct governing my professional licensing ). Attorney Cogdell took the time to make sure I understood what to expect and what things I could do to help my situation. He got me an opportunity to spare my career. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a nonjudgmental, experienced and effective criminal defense attorney.

During our time in working with Attorney Cogdell Jr. he has always shown to be a great asset to our company. Not only through his work ethic but by treating every manner with a since of urgency and most importantly integrity. After working with many attorneys Mr. Cogdell Jr. is by far is at the top of his field.

Mr. Cogdell was referred to me by a previous client. At our initial meeting, I asked Mr. Cogdell to do a Direct Appeal for my son who had been imprisoned 2 weeks earlier. He told me could only take the case if I would agree to hire this other attorney who has more experience. I agreed and on the next day I met with both attorneys and explained to them what my son wanted in his appeal. They both agreed that the fee would be $35,000 with $10,000 up front for each. So eager to get this case started, I requested all of my retirement for the fees and asked them both to please not take my money if they could not do anything. Together they agreed they could. My husband, son, and I paid them the $20,000 and left Mr. Cogdell's office. It took a while for them to get the Direct Appeal done because they said it might take a while to do some investigations. Mr. Cogdell visited my son in prison where he (my son) told him what he wanted him to include in his Direct Appeal. Mr. Cogdell was seldom reachable during the entire process. Messages were not returned and my son was not contacted or informed by either attorney as to how the case was going: as a matter I was told that Mr. Cogdell was not a reliable participant in completing the Appeal Process. The appeal was denied because it was not complete with information to support my son's request. The Appeal Denial Report states that as a main factor for denial. My daughter and I found the information that should have been included with 30 minutes. After the fact, Mr. Cogdell was asked to an MAR and he insisted that he did not want to but that this is the way to get my son released from prison. He was honest and more truthful than the attorney who he requested to work with him. He returned $4000 of my fees for not doing what he should have. Therefore he felt that he deserved $6000 for information I received free from other attorneys. I would refer him for simple cases but not for cases which involves a lot of time and energy. Study the law, know your rights, and take your time in finding the right attorney who has your best interest at heart. Often times you would do better representing yourself.
