About

Greg May is Certified as a Specialist in Appellate Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. My passion is the law itself, and nowhere does an attorney get to immerse oneself in the law more than in appellate practice.Appeals are very different from trials and require a different set of skills. I love the appellate process because it plays to my interests and strengths, and because it focuses on the law without the dramatic sideshows that sometimes accompany trial practice. Research and writing, especially, are my stock in trade and are the cornerstones of any good appellate practice. Having the opportunity to defend my client's positions at oral argument is a bonus, for I have always enjoyed public speaking and debate.Perhaps there is no better testament to my passion for appellate practice than my blog, The California Blog of Appeal, where I have hundreds of posts regarding the peculiarities of appellate practice, substantive developments in the law, court news, research, writing, and the impact of legal technology. I encourage you to take a look at the blog, especially at my series of posts on why it benefits litigants to engage appellate counsel rather than have their trial attorney handle the appeal. In a nutshell: the odds are against the party appealing, so engagement of appellate counsel is an important edge for dealing with the special rules on appeal. If you feel you have been wronged by a court ruling in California, even if it occurs early in the case, give me a call without delay. Though appeals must usually wait until the end of the case, some rulings are immediately appealable, and those that are not are subject to discretionary appellate review if you initiate original proceedings in the Court of Appeal. (Of course, you should also call if your adversary is the one running to the Court of Appeal, in which case I can help you defend the judgment.) If you anticiapte an appeal from a final judgment, it makes sense to call me as the time for judgment approaches, because there are steps you can take in the trial court to increase your chances on appeal.

Greg May reviewed my case dismissed on summary judgment, gave me an honest assessment of its merits, the risks, and proceeded to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. His research was thorough but efficient; the resulting briefs read like a conversation between legal scholars, and the quality of his work was even commented on by the Court. The result was a stunning reversal. On any level of what a client expects in professional representation I could not make a higher recommendation.

Greg has helped me with 5 cases in the past couple years and I have hit home runs each time. The first of these was a business/employment dispute which I was successful in trial. The defendants appealed, and we in turn also appealed the attorneys fees portion of the case. Greg wrote our appeal and the opposition to their appeal. He is meticulous, well reasoned, and for me 100% successful. He argued our case on appeal. We won on our opposition and we won on our attorneys fees appeal which was remanded to trial court and the fees multiplied as a result. Greg helped us on two Employment MSJ oppositions, both of which were successful...One in federal court, and one in state court. Both cases were later settled in large part due to the quality of Greg's arguments. The fourth case in which I received Greg's assistance was an appeal on a trial in which we were successful against one Defendant and unsuccessful against a second - premises liability case. After Greg's thorough briefing on appeal, the respondents called us to settle and gave us everything we requested on appeal plus interest and appellate costs. Finally, we have one more case pending in appellate court. In this employment case, our case was dismissed out of state court. We appealed using Greg as our appellate counsel. The opposition was so weak that we didn't bother to reply and are currently awaiting argument to be set. I cannot recommend Greg enough. He is amazing. Smart. Thorough. My not so secret weapon to success in difficult situations!

i just finished my trial. i got a bad decision. I asked him for advice. He gave me best advise while there was a deadline to ask for a statement of decision from the judge within 10 days after his judgement on bench to get details on his decision which would help with the appeal. This would help the appeal. no other attorney gave me this advice. Thank you and I hope I would have a chance to hire him if i need to appeal.

Greg managed our considerable legal work from litigation to IP work thru several firms and dealt with much of the load himself. Found Greg to be effective and motivated.
