About
I have been a divorce mediator and attorney for nearly 25 years. My decision to keep my practice exclusively out of court stems from my professional experiences both in the private and public sector and from my personal experience growing up with parents who divorced well. While court is the right answer for some, many cases can be kept at the negotiating table --even when there are lots of high stakes and complicated fact patterns. When clerking for Judge Jeffrey Sunshine in New York State Supreme Court I resolved hundreds of trial ready cases and helped people keep their fate in their own hands. In my private practice, I have a non-toxic approach to divorce. I have developed my methods over two decades in practice. I keep 99% of her cases out of the courtroom and at the negotiating table, as I effectively support my clients to create a healthy, uplifted post-divorce life for themselves and their children. Divorce is typically messy but it does not have to ruin your life. Together I will help you press-reset and figure out how to move forward with as few bumps in the road as possible.I mediate in Hampshire County, MA and part time in NYC. I also offer mediation services on an online platform where I assist couples in bringing their marriage to a sensible reconfiguration and close, regardless of location. Sometimes, (especially in snowy weather)even local people sometimes wish to meet online! Learn more at www.gabriellehartley.comI wrote Better Apart; The Radically Positive Way to Separate (Harper Collins) with the mission and vision of smashing the shame and stigma surrounding divorce. People Magazine called my book the conscious uncoupling "how-to" and The New York Post compared it to Marie Kondo's Tidying. While breaking-up doesn't typically "spark joy" it can be the launchpad to the rest of your beautiful future. After growing up in New York City, I attended Cornell University and Brooklyn Law School. I serve as the co-chair of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the American Bar Association, I am member of the Hamsphire Bar Association, The New York State Bar Association, The Association of the Bar of the City of New York and Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation. I reside in Northampton, MA with my husband and three sons.

I consulted with Gabrielle for 3-4 hourly sessions before entering into divorce mediation with another attorney. After looking at my financials and hearing my side of the story, Gabrielle provided me with some very useful inroads and tips as to how to initiate successful divorce negotiations, while not losing sight of the big-picture and the end-goals in mind. Getting separated can also be a psychologically traumatic experience. Gabrielle's words also gave me so much courage and inner strength to deal with this difficult situation and made me achieve my end goals. Consulting with Gabrielle prior to mediation was probably the smartest thing I did and I cannot overstate how much I benefited from this. She is a very personable individual and I would highly recommend her to any prospective client.
Gabrielle has been doing this a long time and knows the law. Because of this she understands situations thoroughly in short order. She won't waste your time with unnecessary billing hours. She gets things filed quickly and moves the process along speedily. She's quick to respond to email and phone calls. She has a sympathetic ear and is very understanding. She showed up to a court date when I asked her to (but she really didn't need to be there) because I needed her physical presence as support. She moved her schedule around that day to accommodate me, and drove out of her way, and that meant so much. It was an emotionally difficult time for me and having her steadfast and confident in my corner made the whole situation much easier to endure. She knows the law and she is a compassionate human being. She was great to work with.
Incredibly responsive, quick thinking, very focused. I did lose some money that was mine, but like you hire an attorney for, kept me focused on ultimate objectives, how it would cost more to pay her to fight things than to get what was right. She also was very focused on the relationship with my children and it's repair. She advised me early on to get a therapist because they are cheaper than her, and was very proactive in coming up with resources I might need and attentive to detail. I felt included in the entire process and what she was thinking. She worked very hard to achieve rapid resolution. She even called me back evenings and during her vacation! We go to court next week to finish everything. She is, however, very fast talking, fast listening - I learned that she has done this for a long time though and knew what I meant even if I didn't get to explain it all.
