I entered law school late in life, entering Gonzaga School of Law at age 44. Because I brought years of experience to school, My attitude and outlook was a bit different from those of my classmates. Having encountered many legal situations first-hand, I studied with the goal of the relation of the law to real people. In working six years for the Spokane County, Washington, prosecutor's office, I had the opportunity to apply what I had learned. I was generally known among the defense bar as a "reasonable" deputy prosecutor, and I valued that reputation. Then, as now, my motto is, "I don't deal with criminals; I deal with people accused of crimes." In my work now, among my foremost concerns is the actual needs of the real people who come to me with problems.I always keep in mind that I'm dealing with a person with a problem and not with an abstract legal issue.
