About
Emma Scanlan is among the most respected criminal defense attorneys in the United States, known nationally for bringing experience, dedication, and passion to her work in defending clients in state and federal courts. As a former prosecutor, she excels in negotiating dismissals and successful resolutions. Emma is an aggressive trial attorney who has achieved not guilty verdicts for clients in tough cases ranging from charges of homicide or white-collar crime to juveniles tried as adults for violent crimes. Her tenacity and knowledge of the criminal court system have led to an impressive record of “not guilty” verdicts in criminal trials. In many cases, Emma helps her clients to obtain pretrial dismissals and very favorable plea deals without the need for a trial. While Emma represents clients of all ages, incomes, and genders, she’s especially proud of her work with law enforcement, female clients, and teens. The criminal court system can be especially daunting for these constituencies, which is why Emma balances her legal prowess with empathy and compassion. Thanks to her sterling reputation in the legal community, Emma was handpicked to be the Assigned Council Expert Master for the King County Department of Defense a position she held for three years. In this role, she helped the court determine which experts should be consulted for specific cases.

To say I was impressed with Emma’s representation would be a huge understatement. She helped me navigate an absolute nightmare of a legal situation with compassion and professionalism. My experience with her was that she is knowledgeable, hardworking and really goes the extra mile for her clients.
Great lawyer! She has helped me for a long time when I was at my lowest to bring me to my highs. If you need anyone that delivers on what they say they're going to do she is that one! I HIGHLY suggest anyone working with her! She gives lawyers a good name.
Emma Scanlan is an incredibly supportive, helpful, knowledgeable, and skilled attorney. She helped me immensely in a time of great need and I am thankful every day for what she did for me. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is in need of legal assistance. Thank you so much for everything Emma.
Emma was very supportive from the start. She listened and provided options. She provided me confidence in her ability to come up with a good outcome leveraging her experience. She provided all the necessary personnel and tools to keep me informed throughout the process
Emma is an outstanding attorney! I was in a serious predicament when I was assaulted with a baseball bat and defended myself through my second amendment right. However the Seattle Police Department arbitrarily took me as the assailant and I was charged. Even with a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Emma and her outstanding investigator were able to bring forth evidence, statements and strong common sense information to the prosecutor’s office that they did not have a case and their attempts for a conviction were futile. They had already done extreme harm to an upstanding member of the community based on an agenda without following up on simple leads and investigating the complaintants backgrounds for criminal history. If you want a dedicated team of an attorney and investigator who are well respected and seasoned in criminal law, seek out Emma Scanlan.
Emma was great from our first meeting. She gathered all all the details of my case without being judgmental and was real honest about my options. She worked hard at negotiating the best outcome for me while still being realistic about the circumstances of my case. Her knowledge of the system and the respect she has earned from people within the system certainly helped my cause. She told me early on that she will always prepare me for things to come, and that there would be no surprises and she was true to her word. I don't plan to ever need an attorney again, but I would not hesitate recommending her to anyone I know needing representation.
I highly recommend Emma Scanlan. I was facing 5 to 10 years in prison, and this matter resolved with me being sentenced to 6 months in work release. Ms. Scanlan worked my case with care and thoroughly explained every option to me. Ms. Scanlan was courteous and professional, and her communication was consistent and timely. I felt at ease during the whole process because I was confident that Ms. Scanlan was working hard on my behalf. I was very happy with the outcome of my case and you will be as well if you hire Ms. Scanlan.
My family and I have used Emma for over 4 years. She it talented, relentless and dediciated to her cases regardless of the time of day. Our family was well taken care of by Emma and John H. Brown. We are grateful that during the most difficult time in our lives we were treated with respect and honesty - even though it was painful to process. I highly recommend Emma and her team.
Emma worked extremely hard and was completely dedicated in getting my husband an extremely fair sentence. Our house was raided by the DEA, taking my husband into Federal Custody charged with a Marijuana Conspiracy, and facing a 10 year mandatory minimum sentence. When we went to the bail hearing the prosecuting attorney was against releasing him on pretrial, with very little time if any for her to review the Discovery she stood in front of the Judge and argued the reasoning that my husband was not a threat to society nor a flight risk, successfully she was able to get him released. I don't know what we would've possibly done had she not been able to get him released on Pre-Trial. To have the Father of my children and the income provider held from us for what turned out to be almost a 2 year Pre-Trial would've been emotionally and financially devastating. Being new to the court system we were very thankful to always have her available, understanding and most important fighting for our family's best interest. As the case progressed and to see the other defendants sentences handed down ranging between 11 to 14 years terrified us, thankfully she was able to get my husband’s mandatory minimum down from 10 years to 5 years, this was great progress. As we approached the sentencing date she let us know that she had convinced the Prosecuting Attorney to go below the 5 year minimum but was still unsure where the Prosecutor was going to come in with his recommendation. Our big day arrived and the Prosecutor was recommending 48 months on the Marijuana Conspiracy, this was good news, and much better than 11 to 14 years like the other defendants received! Emma had mentioned to us the Prosecutor could enhance the crime due to the other "illegal actions" my husband committed during the investigation of the Conspiracy, and she was right as he did so on the day of sentencing. The Prosecutor wanted the Judge to add another 20 months to the recommended 48 months. My heart dropped, my husband admitted to the other illegal action earlier in the Plea hearing and we were now looking at a sentence over 6 1/2 years. Emma impressed me throughout this entire case she never over promised us anything, she is always up front and honest, not telling us what we wanted to hear, she prepared us for anything that could happen. I was especially impressed the day of sentencing in how prepared she was for the prosecutor aggressively pushing for the 20 month enhancement, by providing the Judge with other similar cases in proving the enhancement was not relevant to our case was amazing! When the Judge sentenced my Husband to 33 months and granted our request of the RDAP program, my Husband, Myself and all our Friends and Family that attended the sentencing were shocked with joy and relief! I can say without doubt had we gone with another Attorney my family would be without a father and a husband for a much longer than 33 months. Emma also stepped in when my husband was denied the year off incentive given with the RDAP program (residential drug abuse program), her and her associate were able to get the decision overturned within a very short period of time. The RDAP Director has only seen a handful of people get the decision overturned as his prior case from years back was precluding him from the time off. Thanks to Emma and her staff my husband will be incarcerated for 11 months 15 days.
Emma C. Scanlan is extremely confident and trustworthy. She is incredible. There is not a better firm in Seattle than John Henry Browne and his associate Emma C. Scanlan. They make a great team ! We are just now being able to get our lives back. We thank John and Emma and owe them our gratitude.
John and Emma helped my son and I with our wrongly charged animal cruelty criminal case. Through their work and efforts the trial ended in a mistrial and an acquittal. We are just now being able to get our lives back. We thank John and Emma and owe them our gratitude. If you require a great lawyer when it really matters, do yourself a favor and hire John Henry Browne and his associate Emma C. Scanlan.
Scanlan.
Scanlan.
