I am the founder of San Diego Defenders, the preminent private Civil Rights law firm in San Diego. We are a team of lawyers. That means that two lawyers are always working on your case. We offer in-house payment plans in a comfortable boutique law firm setting with free parking and state of the art conference room and digital screens for viewing and listening to evidence such as the important video received almost all cases. We work hard to get the best results and our reviews show that to be true! I began my law career as a trial lawyer for Federal Defenders of San Diego. I am a 3rd generation lawyer beginning with my grandfather R.G. Smith who began his practice in 1916 during the prohibition era and my father, Raph Smith, and 1950 Northwestern Law graduate and former judge in Phoenix, Arizona. I graduated 1987 Arizona State University with a BS in Economics followed by a law degree 1990 California Western School of Law where I received the American Jurisprudence Award in trial practice. My first job was with former Federal Defenders and later hired as a trial lawyer. My father taught me many trial skills and he actually tried a case with a young Chief Justice William Renquist before he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court. My goal as a lawyer, first and foremost, is to fight for my clients rights civil rights and obtain the best result whether a favorable disposition, a dismissal or an aquittal at trial. I want hel get my client's life back to normal as soon as is possible. Call San Diego Defenders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (619) 258-8888 to talk to Dan Smith directly!

I hired Dan to defend me after being charged in a drug importation case at the border crossing from Mexico. Dan was recommended by an experienced, reputable attorney who told me Dan had much experience in the Federal Courts. When I contacted him he was personable, knowledgeable and informative. He has made one of the most stressful situations of my life a bit more bearable, and has helped me maintain as positive an attitude as possible under these potentially life crushing circumstances. I am probably not the easiest of clients and his patience with me has been exceptional. I have not yet been sentenced, so I am praying and hoping for a miracle. I do have faith that Dan will create the best possible outcome, and I will update my review at my case's conclusion. But for now I would certainly recommend Dan for any Federal Drug charge you are facing. He's not cheap, but quality seldom is, and I believe with his experience he will be worth the cost. If you have made some bad decisions and you find yourself in my unenviable position, Dan is a good choice. And best of luck to you and your outcome.
Mr. Daniel Smith was an exceptional attorney who helped our family when in need. He was able to achieve a 20+ year sentence reduced dramatically. I would recommend Attorney Smith in a heart beat. He is very professional and will guide Step by step. Thank you for all your help Mr. Smith
I was facing a 10 year mandatory minimum conspiracy indictment which involved camera pole surveillance, wiretaps and everything else you can imagine. My criminal past was nearly non-existent but could have still muddied my case. Dan was positive, encouraging and worked hard to not only enable me to bond out until sentencing but because of the relationship and reputation he has within the federal courts here in San Diego, this may turn into a time served issue. Because of him, I am now at home with my family rather than in federal custody. Thank you, Dan!
Dan Smith did a great job helping my family with our situation. He was very flexible and patient with all of our questions and with this being our first time needing a lawyer we had a lot of questions
I highly recommend Daniel M. Smith of the San Diego Defenders to anyone having trouble with the law, as was the case with my son. I believe that Mr. Smith is an outstanding lawyer. Mr. Smith took a great deal of interest in my son's situation, and did a significant amount of research to build a case to help him, which led to a sympathetic response of the court, and to a large reduction of his sentence. In addition, he provided a great deal of encouragement and moral support to my son and to his family. I think that my son was lucky to find such an excellent lawyer.
We all make mistakes and I am no exception. I was charged with Felony DUI with injury. This was my first time every being arrested and I was terrified of what the consequences would be. I searched for a good local lawyer and was pointed in the direction of San Diego Defenders law office. I called and arranged for a consultation. I met with Dan Smith and he was very honest and patient with my questions. I decided to retain their services. I was represented very well by Jon Pettis. In the end I was faced with fines, scram (90 days), 3 month DUI class, probation and 10 day public service. This was much better than the alternative of 2-4 year prison sentence. The office was responsive to inquiries and responded quickly. I hope to never need their services again, but if I ever find myself in a legal bind again, I definitely will be calling on the San Diego Defenders!
Provided me with information that I needed over the phone. Great attorney had a client too and made the time to give the info that I needed. I definitely recommend him.
If you are reading this, it is probably because you are doing what I did a little over 9 months ago, and that is surf the net for reviews on a good Criminal Defense Attorney. I was looking at four (4) Felonies and One (1) Misdemeanor, which meant jail time for sure. I was worried, petrified, and uneasy it all added up to considerable amount of stress. I drove by San Diego Defenders office almost every day, not realizing that I would need to contact them. During my first meeting with Mr. Daniel Smith, I felt a load off my back, my stress level reduced, because he was going to work on keeping me out of jail. He did not make any promises, but showed me that he was confident on his criminal defense skills, along with his Partner Jon Pettis, very knowledgeable and they work well together. Dan and his partner have a good relationship with the DA’s office, and Courts (I think that is very important). They knew the right people to get my case reduced, stay out of Jail with a low risk case; they also worked out a payment plan with the court. I was happy with the outcome and glad I made the right choice in calling San Diego Defenders office. Good Luck!
Daniel Smith is the definition of legal tenacity. My immigration case was complex. He worked diligently for over two years. With his extensive knowledge, he was able to exhaust all avenues and obtain a winning solution to my situation. Thank you San Diego Defenders!
Mr Smith represented me well, kept me informed along the way, help keep me calm and confident in unknown territory. Furthermore, when questions arose he took my call and answered all my questions. He made it easier to afford by offering a payment plan.

Mr Smith represented me well, kept me informed along the way, help keep me calm and confident in unknown territory. Furthermore, when questions arose he took my call and answered all my questions. He made it easier to afford by offering a payment plan.
Good Luck!
