Dan represents Minnesota clients against both a broad array of criminal charges and after-the-fact assistance with expungements. He is a member of several organizations dedicated to criminal defense, including the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MACDL) the National College of DUI Defense (NCDD) and is a founding member of the DUI Defense Lawyers Associataion (DUIDLA). He is the acting Secretary for the exclusive, invite-only Minnesota Society for Criminal Justice (MSCJ) and is on the Executive Council for the Criminal Law section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. In his years of practice, Dan has developed extensive experience in contested criminal matters, ranging from 8 week-long first degree murder trials that involve extensive expert testimony regarding DNA, to day-long contested hearings challenging the scientific basis for DWI tests. Alongside his work in local district courts, Dan also regularly represents clients before the Minnesota Court of Appeals on either criminal appeals or Implied Consent civil appeals. In 2010 Dan was selected by Minnesota Lawyer as one of only 25 “Up and Coming Attorneys” by Minnesota Lawyer.Dan was actively involved in the work of not only the Source Code Coalition, but also acted as an attorney for the plaintiff-intervenors in the Federal Court settlement that ultimately resulted in the disclosure of the source code to the now-retired Intoxilyzer 5000EN. When he’s not in court, Dan teaches other defense attorneys on the art of DWI defense, including his recurring Webcast on the “Chemical Testing” chapter of Minnesota’s “DWI Deskbook” (he also authored several chapters in that publication). In 2014 and 2015 Dan was selected to Super Lawyer's list of "Rising Stars" a distinction reserved for 2.5% of attorneys practicing in his field. Dan regularly blogs on criminal defense issues - primarily DWI issues – on the award winning “Minnesota DWI Defense Blog.” In addition to teaching duties, he also provides pro bono work for non-profit organizations that deal with criminal law issues; he was the sole author of the amicus curiae brief filed on behalf of the Minnesota Society for Criminal Justice in the Minnesota Supreme Court case of Patino v. One 2007 Chevrolet and again in the Minnesota Supreme Court case of Axelberg v. Comm’r of Pub. Safety.
