Growing-up in a close-knit family and being active in the community, I understood the importance of family bond and the joy of helping others. Years ago, I lived next door to a couple in their early 40s. The husband operated a small business while the wife stayed at home with their daughter. The husband unexpectedly passed away without having an estate or business succession plan in place. Eventually, the business closed and the wife was forced to move out of their home.
