I have used Mr Smitherman multiple times and he has always taken care of my needs without over charging for his service. His assistant Angel stays on top of things and keeps you informed. You can not ask for anything else from an attorney.
My Dad and I hired Chris Smitherman in 2008. Dad was accused of a crime he did not commit. I met with Chris initially at his office on behalf of Dad b/c Dad was in prison. After that, Chris only had five minutes to sit down to discuss our case before someone knocked on his door to pull him out for someone else's court appearance. He never took the time to sit or talk with us to explain the status of the case nor did we ever understand the case or any evidence they had against him after repeated calls to his office for help. We were told by Chris after a couple of years, there was evidence located that could possibly exonerate Dad but it was never told to us, shown to us or mentioned again. We could not get Chris to call us back no matter how many times we called or how many messages we left with his staff to tell us the good news about this new evidence! We never did find out! Chris didn't come to each court appearance. He was far too busy to help my Dad and I feel he honestly didn't really care. The entire time up until my Dad went to jail, Chris asked for more money. The original agreed upon amount was $5000.00 to handle my dad's case from start to finish. Once this was paid, he insisted on more money every month or he would "quit my Dad's case" even mentioning one time that he had a truck payment to make. We didn't have the money then to hire anyone else since we had already paid him so we kept on trying to get Chris to help us. He kept the details my Dad's evidence and case from us and other details of his case we never knew. Chris failed him. He never explained or presented any of that evidence that could have possibly dismissed my Dad's case that he mentioned they had (another man's DNA). If that was an error he should have told us it was a mistake. We never knew or found out anything about any such evidence at all! Dad took the plea deal and pleaded guilty so he would not have to take the chance at his age of going to jail the rest of his life and not seeing his grandchildren or being with us again. He took the plea deal and spent a year in prison. Chris only cares about getting your money and once he has that, your case means nothing to him nor your loved one. That was the case with my Dad. Good luck to you but do not hire this man.
This attorney and his staff are below professional standards. Does not return phone calls, emails, and simply keeping a client updated regarding case. He spoke more to the other party than he did me the one who paid him. Be Aware before hiring him. He just wants the money and he’s done with you.
This attorney and his practice are below professional standards. Failure to return phone calls, emails, and simply keeping a client updated regarding case progress were rampant. After hiring this attorney for almost a year, I decided to part ways. After dismissing him as counsel, I learned he had not even filed documents with the court system he indicated he had. He accepted a retainer and requested even more money to continue with the case. I asked for itemized documentation of how my retainer was used and was never provided with the information. I would never recommend this attorney to any person. Please be aware.
