I wish there were more than 5 stars for Chris. The darkest time of my life was going through a 10 year custody battle with an evil ex-husband, & I could not have gone through it without Chris (physically, emotionally, mentally, or financially). He made sure I knew that he would fight his hardest for me & he did just that. He stood right by my side, put his heart & soul into my case & myself & my children, did what he does best in the court room & came out on top every time. My family & I will be forever grateful. He also knew the debt I incurred from this long legal fight &, more than generously, kept my bills as low as he could. I highly recommend Chris!

Chris did a Wonderful job of stepping after my excellent Family attorney could not close my Divorce settlement. Chris came aboard and neutralize a highly emotion situation . I only needed Chris once in Court but he kept going back in until I felt secure with my Settlement. This is one attorney who truly cares about his clients. He had never met me before but he got me out of jail and got my simple assault charge dismissed within hours. My case had two components and after the criminal charges were dropped I hired him to continue on with me in a case against a private university. He was on the ball, insightful, easily accessible, and clearly more than capable in his field. His fee was incredibly reasonable, in fact, unbelievable, for the amount of work and attention I received not only from him, but from one of his partners who also worked on my case. I felt confident and assured having Chris in my corner fighting for me in what felt like a David and Goliath situation. I would hire him again and have in fact recommended him to a few friends. Chris is the guy you want on your side.

I came to Chris Gowen with an aggravated assault case which held a maximum of 25 years, domestic violence case which held a maximum of 10 years, simple assault, threats, a protective order, and custody that included child support. These cases where in DC and MD. The charges were an attempt by my ex girlfriend to take my child away from me. Just being released from a 3 day stint in jail I was crushed and worried about losing my job and freedom. The young women who accused me of these egregious acts attempted to manipulate the system in order to take my child and get a sizable check from child support. Knowing that I was not guilty I wanted a lawyer that would not take a plea deal. I wanted a lawyer that would fight to the bitter end to erase any criminal record. I wanted a lawyer that would be strong even when I wanted to give up. I got everything I wanted in a lawyer when I hired Chris. The results of my case was effectively dismantling a criminal case on simple assault and threats to the point where the judge asked Chris to not finish his closing because of how much he destroyed the persecutor in his rebuttals and cross examinations. Chris than had the felony case for aggravated assault dropped. The misdemeanor for domestic violence that held a maximum of 10 years was also dropped. The protective order was dropped. I was able to get joint physical and legal custody of my child with 50% visitations. My child support has come down so much that I barely know its coming out of my paycheck. Every record of my case has been expunged in DC and MD. It as if I never went through this incredibly dark time and I have Chris to thank for it.

This man, once he had realized I was challenging him on his ethics (Sure - smoking pot and popping oxycontin all day is Ok bit what about when there is a 6 year old kid in the picture), was as unprofessional and misogynistic as they come. Things got so bad that I honestly thought he was secretly representing my Ex. Mr Gowan had started calling me “anxious”, “overreactive”, (all that was missing was the Freudian slip of “hysterical”)… and he was above all else quite arrogant. Imagine FIST BUMPING your opposing counsel in the court house. Yes, that happened.

I hired Chris for a child support case against an out of state defendant that dragged on for two years. I was owed close to 40k and ended up with 1K in net arrears. I had concerns about the representation throughout the duration of the case. While Chris worked very hard on my behalf, he didn't work smart. For example, Chris failed to inform me of an interstate process that is available for dealing with out of state defendants that could have cut the duration and cost of the case in half. After doing my own research a year after I hired Chris, I started this process myself for a total cost of $25 for the filing fee. I didn't have to hire another attorney to pursue this process. The State of Maryland has on staff dedicated attorneys to deal with out of state defendants in child support cases. Maryland's Office of Child Support Enforcement will confirm that the cost for pursuing an out of state defendant through this process is $25 for the person filing the case. Chris did represent me pro-bono on an appeal after my case was dismissed in the State of Maryland as a result of a judicial error, and won this appeal. But this appeal would not have been necessary in the first place if the interstate process had been pursued right after I hired Chris. In addition, Chris failed to zealously advocate on my behalf. He made an offer of less than half of what I was owed in monthly child support to the defendant without consulting with me beforehand. When the case came to conclusion, he tried to talk me into accepting an offer of less than half of what I was owed. I ended up negotiating on my own behalf. Through negotiating on my own behalf, I got close to what I was owed in monthly child support payments, about double of what Chris offered to the defendant's lawyer, and relatively little in arrears. But I still got more in arrears than what Chris and the defendant's attorney hashed out together and considered a fine offer.
