Carolyn is an excellent attorney who masterfully represents her clients while maintaining the highest of ethical standards and professionalism when dealing with opposing counsel. Carolyn was actually opposing counsel in a custody matter that originated in Texas and has left me with nothing but a high opinion of the family law attorneys in Durango.
We hired Caroline to get our daughter a more consistent schedule. As a Father fighting for custody of his child, you feel as though the odds are against you before you even begin trial. We followed all of her recommendations, and she fully discussed everything with us. Our trial took a lot longer then expected, but it was due to trial scheduling and issues on the other side. Caroline was honest with us, she couldn't Guarantee that we would win our case. But we pressed on. Now looking back, we wanted to hire the most aggressive lawyer we could find. Someone to go in the court room like it was a boxing ring. This perception of how we thought she needed to do her job was wrong. Caroline is a very graceful BULLDOG. Knowing when to politely attack in front of the judge, and when to play it cool. ANY custody battle has very high emotions, and tempers. But the thing we learned from Caroline is that having that attitude when dealing with your child in any situation is very unhealthy. Her job is to guide you, provide the evidence of why your child would be better off in your home compared to the other home. She was our custody Lawyer, she is not the judge, and definitely not God. She is not in control or responsible for the outcome. The outcome reflects what the judge feels is best for your child. Which I Know-can suck. After 10 long months, we finally won our case. Its been over a year now. Our Daughter has been able to blossom in a more stable, consistent environment. Which has allowed her to improve the relationship she has with all of her parents, and everybody. Also all of the parents (step/Bio) have been able to develop a healthy relationship which allows proper communication for our daughter. It has been a huge blessing that has been life changing for us. Although we hope that we will not have to return to the court room, we still have years to share our child. Caroline will be our Lawyer if we ever need another in the future, she actual still holds our "folder" of all of our documentation and such. She is a hard working, compassionate person. Our words could never truly reflect the appreciation we have for this woman.
I hired Carolyn Wilber because I was served a SAPCR from Texas when I was 8 months pregnant and she told me that "A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client." She negotiiated a Stipulated Parenting Plan with the other side without my say-so that had my son crossing into Texas. My son was a newborn infant, mind you. I hired a lawyer for a reason. I did not go to law school and did not understand the legalese like I do now. After spending 3 $4,500 retainers, nothing positive has come out of this case. It has been in the worsts interests of the child. Carolyn would file things and then cancel the hearings because she had to go on vacation. My experience with Carolyn was disastrous and I am left picking up the pieces. She was very condescending with any questions I needed answered. Also, I needed council in Texas so then she advised me to hire someone she spoke to, another disaster. None of this was ever rectified. Never received a simple apology.
