About

Ben was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in suburban Philadelphia. As a youth, Ben spent several summers working on a ranch in Big Timber, Montana. It was the ranching experience that encouraged Ben to return to the West. After studying for a year at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and graduating from Hamilton College in upstate New York with an English degree, Ben enrolled in the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College in Portland. After graduation in 1993, Ben accepted an associate attorney position with the law firm of Cowling and Heysell, a founding partner of Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell. He has been a partner in the firm since 2000.Ben's practice is primarily focused in the areas of general civil litigation and appellate practice. His practice has centered around the defense of medical and legal professionals, federal court litigation, representation of municipalities, and water law.He serves on the executive boards of the Litigation Section of the Oregon State Bar and the Federal Bar Association for the District of Oregon. He is also a member of the Oregon Council on Court Procedures and a contributor to Oregon State Bar Continuing Legal Education materials.In the local community, Ben is a Board Member of the Greater Oregon Chapter of the March of Dimes, an active member of Temple Emek Shalom, and a coach of the North Medford High School mock trial team.He lives in Ashland with his wife and three children.
