Ben C. Harrison has been practicing law in South Carolina now for over four decades. After receiving a B.S. degree in Industrial Management at Clemson University in 1964, he worked for Shell Oil Company until the summer of 1966. He enrolled at the University at the South Carolina School of Law in September of 1966. There he became a member of Phi Alpha Delta and the Order of the Wig and Robe. He received his Juris Doctorate degree in May of 1969. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in September of 1969. He is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court of South Carolina and the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. Ben joined a general practice firm in Spartanburg in 1969 and practiced with that firm until 1990 primarily engaged in civil litigation and representing on workers’ compensation claims. At the beginning of 1991 he and J. Mark Hayes started the firm of Harrison and Hayes with a practice focused on civil litigation and representing claimants in workers’ compensation cases. In the year 2000, Harrison and Hayes merged with the firm of Smith and Coggins and with John B. White, Jr. forming the firm of Harrison, White, Smith, Hayes and Coggins. In April of 2003, J. Mark Hayes left the firm after being elected to an at-large seat as a South Carolina Circuit Court Judge. Ben considers one of his career highlights his participation in the tobacco litigation on behalf of the State of South Carolina which resulted in a settlement of over two billion dollars. Both he and White were on the team appointed by the South Carolina Attorney General.  His practice today is still focused on civil litigation and workers’ compensation. He still enjoys the practice of law in that it gives him the opportunity to interact with people from all walks of life. According to him, it is a very stimulating way to start each day.
